Today, or this morning my wife and I went to the Famous Ferrell's Restaurant in Hopkinsville, KY. Nice little restaurant! Not too impressed with the food. First; we ordered some coffee, my wife asked for some strong coffee...they didn't or don't have any, so we just accepted what they had. This coffee was so weak, that it tasked weaker then Army coffee when you go to the field! Very weak with vary little taste. Second; we both ordered the Breakfast Special (2 eggs, bacon or sausage and toast for $5.18). There were a few others in there waiting....so we waited to, ordered the food and viewed the service. Noticed that a customer paid their ticket/bill with cash, handed cash over to one lady, and they lady rang it up, and gave the customer her change back. The same lady was assisting the cook; she cracked open 2 eggs into a bowl, and noticed that an egg shell fell inside the bowl, she took the same hand that handled the cash, grabbed the loose egg shell out of the bowl and threw it away! Unsanitary! The main cook then took out some sausage patties, placed them on the cutting board in front of the grill, smashed them down to spread them out. She then took her spatula and scooped up the sausage patties, 3, and placed them on the flat grill. The cook then grabbed some toast, placed the toast on the same cutting board, on the same place where she placed the uncooked sausage patties, and cut them with a sharp object, no knife! As this was going on, I noticed that either ladies wore gloves, nor any hair nets! One lady was taking cash from customers and using her same hands to touch raw uncooked food! At times, she would wipe her hands off on her apron or a nasty towel. I witnessed cash handling and raw food handling all in less then 30 seconds, by the same lady! No washing of hands or gloves! She would also write down orders with a pen she used, and then turn around and touch raw food or toast! Very Unsanitary and unclean! Not going back.........sorry! Made me sick a few times while watching...
Read moreWhile service is slow with multiple orders around lunch and the building is small, Ferrel's brings to mind what a burger is about: time to cook, perfect amount of seasoning, even melted cheese and a pickle. Yes, they're small, yes, depending on when you go, you might wait about 30 minutes for a small burger, and yeah, most of their beverages come in a bottle and sides are chips in a small bag, but from the first bite to the last, you're in for a treat.
While the portion sizes are small, an order of 3 can fill you up. They even have hotdogs, split in the middle, that are grilled on the lone grill with the rest of the items like cheese (yes, they grill the cheese a little) and onions, which are just as good the burgers. I recommend trying the pie, too.
Ferrell's is also a part of Hopkinsville; a road trip stop to this Kentucky city, in my opinion, should include a stop by Ferrell's. The service is a little slow, but that's because it's usually two to three people behind the small counter, and sometimes it does get backed up, but that's a forgivable trait. Sure, Wendy's, Arby's, Burger King, McDonald's, Dairy Queen, Rally's/Checker's, and Hardy's/Carl Jr.'s have speed, but you can't beat a low price that gets you a delicious burger.
I do recommend going to it on a walking tour of the city itself before or after you go by Whistle Stop Donuts up the street, it's perfect for getting...
Read moreWhen it comes to a good simple burger, Ferrells is one of the best. These arent gourmet, thick, pink-in-the middle, stuffed, $12 burgers ppl seem to ooh n ahh over. They are simple 1/4 lb thin patties that are never precooked.
They have been using the same griddle forever and everything is cooked on it... bacon, eggs, burgers, seared buns, etc. so every burger has a subtle bacon flavor and seared crispiness that only Ferrells burgers have. They use high quality, local ground beef with enough fat to make them crispy and juicy eventhough they are thin.
the tradition Ferrells burger comes with pickles and onions only but you can add mustard, katsup, mayo or any combination there of. they have singles, doubles, with/without cheese, bacon, or fried egg. never had a fryer so no french fries but they have chips and chili to go with the burgers. no fountain drinks but various canned sodas are available.
they are open 24hrs so aside from lunch, 2-3am on the weekend is very busy. i usually try to call in my order since they are so yummy and popular, it could take 10-20 mim for an order at any given time of day (they always seem to have 5-8 orders in the process of being made). if you get single patty burgers, you should probably order 2... one never seems to be enough to fill the craving.
If you have never had a ferrells burger, you need to go at least once. you will want to...
