Native Houstonian and long time Antones customer (20+ years).
You can get their "ok" sandwiches in the grocery store, or you can get the most amazing and freshest sandwiches straight from the shop. My trip today though was different, hopefully just a one-off. Ordered two super originals through the drive-thru. When it comes to the drive-thru you know it's not going to be made right then and there, they probably made it earlier this morning, and that is fine. But these two today we're cold and smooshed and tasted like they were the ones you would buy at the grocery store.
If you know antone's, you know there's a night and day difference between what you buy at the store and what you buy when it is fresh, at the shop.
Neither of these sandwiches were made today, they were not made a couple hours ago, they were made at least yesterday or earlier. Which doesn't make it a bad sandwich, just doesn't make it as good as what has come to be expected when you buy it from the shop.
Again hopefully this is just a one-off situation and not a new regular norm for them. But hopefully they haven't switched their model to reflect using sandwiches in store that remained on previous days. Customers notice these things, at least the long...
Read moreSadly, this place continues to go down hill. I have eaten Antone's Super Poboy since I was 6 years old with my Dad (57 years ago) when he he worked downtown. I always loved the way the original shop on Taft Road smelled. Against my better judgment, I stopped by and ordered the Super with extra chow chow. I saw a look of disappointment when the woman saw I only tipped $1. I guess that's why, even though she asked if I was dining in or to go, she gave me a wrapped sandwich instead of an open faced sandwich in the basket like the people at the other tables. Of course, there was no extra chow chow either. Not that someone who takes orders at the counter deserves a tip, but that is exactly why it was not 2 or 3 dollars. They never add extra chow chow anymore when I ask. So that is it with these folks! Maybe that's also why there are not many stores left in Houston like there were years back. The people don't care. And for $10 a sandwich, that's a crime. Bye...
Read moreSo, I was on my way home and decided to try this restaurant for the first time. I drove up to the drive thru. I didn’t get a Hello, “How can I help you?” Instead I got, “Are you ready to order?” As I was giving her my order she says, “I can’t hear you!”, so I proceeded to tell her again. She then tells me, “I can’t hear you. Drive to the front! We are about to close!” Another girl came to the window and took my order. Tell me why I get home to find a cold nasty sub that was premade. The wrapping was cold as well. I undo the wrapping to see what looks like cat food pate tuna with old cheese and pickles. This has to be to worst ever! If I could give you a zero, I would! Shame on you for serving this trash to customers for $13. First and definitely the last time and will inform people NOT to ever go to your establishment. Teach your girl with the drive thru headpiece some...
