My daughter turned 12 in November. We haven't been to Houston for a while so I thought while we're in town, let's go to the restaurant my family has been going to since before I was born, Don Carlos. It's a family favorite. 4 generations have experienced quality service at this restaurant. My grandmother lived right around the corner. Whenever my family has a meetup or gathering, we choose Don Carlos. The male manager knows us well. Tonight my daughter ordered a kid's meal taco with rice & beans. The kid's menu is for children 12 or younger. They charged us nearly $10 for her meal. We asked why after I made it clear that we wanted a Kid's Meal multiple times. The manager (woman) stared at my daughter and didn't believe us. I thought this is ridiculous. Why in the world are they being like this? I began to tell the manager that my family has been coming to this restaurant around 40 years. She cut me off repeatedly with a smirk and said she doesn't speak English. I thought, you have to be kidding me. Whether you speak English or not, you don't continuously cut me off. That's highly rude and unprofessional. Especially after you've insulted my family and made us out to be liars over a measly $3 d correction. How disrespectful. My family has always been treated with respect and kindness by the Male manager over the years. My dad is returning tomorrow to speak with him and share how we were treated this evening. It was highly uncalled for. I should make note that we just left a funeral this evening. That's why we're in town. This is sad. We'll never be returning after being talked to and treated as we were. That's a lot of family who will not be returning. Goes to show how unprofessional behavior can cost a big loss for...
Read moreGrew up coming to this location and recently visited with a large party after a family funeral. Because the manager was assisting our waitress by taking orders, we asked her (the manager) if the menu was still valid since it was 3:06 pm (Menu changes at 3pm) she quickly brought us new menus and explained that the change is automatic on the system but we were free to order from the early one if we’d like. A couple minutes later our waitress, Julieta, takes it upon herself to confront us and ask if we were the ones who asked for a menu change. We explained we were just wanting to confirm if it was valid. Well, she proceeded to have an ugly attitude, eyes rolling and all, the rest of our time there. It was so uncomfortable to the point that we didn’t even want her to come back to us anymore. When we get the bill, we realize there’s automatic gratuity and her attitude towards us makes sense, since she’s under the impression she’s getting tip regardless. We speak to the manager about the experience and she quickly apologized and removes the gratuity. As someone who was a waitress for a very long time, I tend to over tip. Not this time. We go back to our table and we see the manager reprimanding Julieta. Then, as we are saying our goodbyes, my husband spots Julieta by the kitchen, along with another waitress, pointing, laughing and mocking us. Guess she forgets there’s a mirror all along the back wall. People like her shouldn’t be in the service industry. The only reason I’m leaving two stars is because the food was good and the manager was very kind and...
Read moreThis place is amazing. The portions are pretty big for the price. So you'll have left over. It almost has a bunch of options on the menu as well. Definitely not TexMex. Also, they give 50% off for the military 🪖.
The environment is very festive and clean. The servers are very nice and on point. They came by and checked our table many times and only communicated with us as needed. I can tell that the staff is very professional because there are multiple people bussing the tables at one time. Keeping everything clean and orderly.
3-31-2023 update --- we went back here on our way to Mississippi and stopped here for dinner. The first time the food and service was great. This time around the the tacos (meat) we ordered was bitter and it was not tasty. Also they did NOT give us the military discount that was advertised. There is a GIANT poster at the door that says 50% off for military people but this discount was not received the second time around. We're not sure why. If they are not giving out the discount then the advertisement should be taken down. It is false advertisement. So I have decreased from 5 stars to 3 stars the rating as average. Our server was nice, she remembered us from last time. Minus one star for having false poster at the door about the military discount. And the minus one star...
