I recently experienced absolutely stunningly-delicious craft barbecue in one of the most unlikely places you might think of ā at a corporate building food court in Greenway Plaza near downtown Houston. Yes, you read that right ā a food court. Feges BBQ (itās pronounced almost like you would say the plural of the word Fiji ā āfee ā jisā) is that place ā and man is it awesome!! They have been open for right around two years now. It was started by Patrick Feges and his wife, Erin Smith. Erin is classically-trained chef, who has held key posts at some pretty amazing restaurants in NYC and Houston. She has also been the winning chef on Chopped, the popular show on the Food Network. Patrick has been smoking meat professionally since 2012, and has received training at some pretty amazing Houston-area barbecue spots before they opened their Greenway Plaza restaurant. When I say their barbecue is amazing, I am not alone. Just last year Feges BBQ was named one of Texas Monthly Magazineās Top 25 New Barbecue Joints in Texas. They have just incredible smoked meat. There are too many choices honestly. I wanted to try the whole hog (yes, as in what they do in the Carolinas and Tennessee), pork belly, pulled pork, turkey and their boudin. But I knew that I had limited space in my stomach. And since this was my first visit, I went with the Texas Trinity of brisket, pork ribs and sausage.
-- Brisket ā I love the point end of the brisket, so went with some slices of fatty. And I tell ya, that brisket was stunning, It was very moist, lucious, and melt-in-your-mouth, with a great bark and fantastic flavor. -- Pork ribs ā The pork ribs were a St. Louis cut, with an outstanding bark, a great chewy exterior, and the meat was moist and flavorful. -- Sausage ā The sausage was exceptional. It had a firmly-packed filling with a reasonably-fine grind and great flavor. And it was smoked beautifully, with a good snap to the casing and not too chewy or shriveled up.
What I wasnāt prepared for was both the variety and deliciousness of their sides. There were too many to choose from. I ultimately decided on Erinās Moroccan spiced carrots and the elote corn salad. Both were fantastic. Given that they are in a commercial building food court, they also offer other choices ā like kale salad or BBQ chef salad for lunch. The housemade pickles and pickled red onions and their two different kinds of barbecue sauce were very nice complements to the amazing meat.
I wish I would have had room for dessert. Iāve heard great things about them as well ā especially the banana+caramel cream pie. The truth is, I am going to have go back again (and again) to try the food that I didnāt get to try this time around. If only Greenway Plaza were a shorter...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreWhen I heard the power couple, Patrick Feges and Erin Smith, was going to open their own BBQ joint, I was pumped. With their culinary backgrounds, they both possess a prowess in the kitchen and around the smoker. I always make Amber eat barbecue on our road trips, but we actually skipped it on our prior Houston visit. It was an easy sell to get her onboard with Feges. The menu is pretty diverse and has a nice focus on sides.
My wife and I shared a meat spread of brisket, pork ribs, and turkey. I was planning to order pulled pork but forgot. Oops. We did not skimp on the sides and got loaded potato salad, sweet & spicy sprouts, braised collard greens, Moroccan spiced carrots, dirty rice, and cornbread. The brisket was wonderful with its peppery bark. It was Friday so the brisket was sourced from 44 Farms. The fat was rendered nicely, and the meat had a good flavor to it. Sometimes I think my wife is harder to please with brisket, but she gave her seal of approval on it. The pork ribs were good but nothing stood out about them. They were cooked well but no pop in taste. I was left wanting more. The turkey was juicy and flavorful. I do enjoy eating turkey now and always like when it is well executed. Good for those on who are on "diets."
We loved all the sides except for the collard greens. Those were boring. The Moroccan spiced carrots and the Brussel sprouts stood out the most. They were very unique to see on a BBQ menu but tasted great. If these types of veggies were on barbecue menus more often, I would probably weigh 10 pounds lighter... It was a beautiful spread. We capped our meals off with the PB&J chocolate cake and banana & caramel cream pie. I hate peanut butter and am allergic to chocolate so the cake was all Amber's. She dug it. We brought some for a friend, and her husband ate it all. As of now, they are still together. The pie was like a banana pudding with a crust. You guys know I like banana pudding. I finished it off even though I was stuffed before even biting into it.
When I heard that Feges BBQ was opening up in a food court in a business district, I was perplexed. It all makes sense now though. This is not their end game. It is actually just the beginning. They eventually will have their own standalone spot, but for now, please hit up Greenway Plaza. Just do not plan to go during the weekends. They are open Monday...

I want to take a moment to express my deep gratitude to Feges BBQ for their incredible support of the veteran community. As someone who has served, it means a lot when a business not only acknowledges that sacrifice but backs it up with real, tangible appreciation. Offering free meals for veterans on Fridays isnāt just generousāitās powerful. It says, āWe see you, we value you, and we want to feed you like family.ā And let me tell you, the food theyāre serving? Itās worth every bit of praise.
From the moment I walked in, I felt welcomedānot just as a customer, but as a human being with a story. The staff were kind, respectful, and genuinely proud to be part of something that gives back. There was no awkwardness, no red tape, no fine print. Just good Texas BBQ and gratitude.
Now, letās talk about the BBQ itself. Feges BBQ is phenomenal. The brisket is tender and flavorful, practically melting in your mouth. The ribs fall off the bone and are seasoned to perfection. The turkey is shockingly moist, and the sausage is bold and smoky. But what sets Feges apart are the sidesācollard greens, elote-style corn, pimento mac and cheese, and their famous whole grain mustard potato salad. This isnāt your average BBQ spot. This is BBQ with soul, love, and culinary creativity.
Even better, the atmosphere is laid-back, clean, and welcoming. Whether youāre there with your family, fellow vets, or on your own, it feels like a place where you can take a load off and be appreciated for more than just your money.
Thank you, Feges BBQ, for not forgetting us. Thank you for feeding veterans not just with food, but with dignity. Your Friday meals arenāt just a bite to eatāthey're a warm reminder that service is seen, remembered, and honored. In a world that often moves on too quickly, gestures like this matter.
To my fellow vetsādo yourself a favor and head to Feges on a Friday. Youāll walk out with a full belly and...
