My husband and I had been looking for authentic Mexican food rather than Tex Mex or chain restaurants, and we were pleasantly surprised when we found this place on our lunch break! My husband had the fajitas, which were inexpensive at lunch and incredibly tender. The tortillas were homemade, so of course I had to snag one from him. I had the flautas, which were superb. The sauces did not overwhelm the flavor of the food as they do at most establishments. Most importantly, the flan was to die for!! I am a huge fan of flan and have had it at countless restaurants, and this was by far the creamiest, most delicious flan I have ever had.
The only downside was the noise - it was very loud in the small room, and my husband and I could not hear each other over everyone else. We mostly listened to the people around us shouting their conversations. However, as we were leaving a duo came in playing festive music on the accordion and keyboard, and - though loud - they added to the atmosphere. Granted, the noise is not something that can be helped, and reflects the popularity of the restaurant. :)

Read moreGorditas Aguascalientes is one of the 10 places that I will take out of town guests to dine, in order to give them a taste of the breadth and variety of dining experiences in Houston. The original location is on Bissonnet. But I live closer to this Irvington location. As you will see from the photographs, the atmosphere is festive. There is a row of aguas frescas to select from. My preference is "melon" (cantaloupe). There is a mountain of freshly made masa, from which the various antojitos can be made. Antojito means "before the little eyes" and translates roughly as snacks, amuse bouche, little tasty things....you get the idea. Now in Mexico, a lot of these would be your street food. A little snack from a street vendor. Sopes, gorditas, tacos, etc. Lots of choices of fillings. And the regular menu lists entrees, combination plates, and more. You will see a lot of people enjoying a beef soup with meat and vegetables (caldo de res). This is a place where ambulatory musicians frequent, hoping to earn a little money by playing a requested song. It is a classic "Mexico in Houston" destination.
And the food...
