Came here on a whim during lunch, wanting Cantonese Cuisine. Ordered a Lunch Special of Salt Toasted Squid ($5.50), and Portuguese Rice House Special ($6), as Staff/Owner told me portion was austere (asked him about it because I'm already a fat fugg, ie I'm looking to portion control).
Started out with a, complementary, small bowl of chicken, corn, and (eggdrop?) Soup. Delicious, did it's job got my appetite going.
The Squid was amazing, not overtly salty, as I thought the name would suggest. Certainty, flavorful, chocked full of umami, not overpowering as opposed to Sechuan Cuisine. Definitely, not at all greasy. The texture was soft, yet substantive enough for that Al-dente feel. Came with finely chopped shallots, bell peppers, green onion… did BOH staff a favor by cleaning the damn plate, with exception of some of the streamed rice. I couldn't eat anymore, I was stuffed for the lowly sum of $5.
As for the Portuguese Rice came in a 3" deep large casserole dish, appeared mouthwateringly good. But, had to take it in a to-go box. Some of the creamy goodness was still and shamelessly cleaned up any remaining morsels, you're welcome Wing Kee's dishwasher. Dropping it off at my Mom's job, so she can enjoy.
Staff was very attentive and cordial, and the place was packed for lunch service with the Alief's local Asian crowd, elderly folks and a few young professionals. Seems like y'all don't know about this place, perfect. I rarely tell anyone not from Alief about the good hole-in-the-stripmall places, and is the first ever review I've written. Only wrote this cause I'm unwinding after work, and randomly saw the google prompt I usually ignore. Had to get it off my chest. Total was $12, gave the man $15 in appreciation. Let the gentleman know, I'll...
Read moreThis place has okay food...however our experience was really bad. My friend ordered before, so the food was on the table about 5 minutes before I got there. I thought it was strange when the waitress did not come by to ask if everything was okay, but I still gave them the benefit of the doubt. I noticed that they went to all other tables to check on customers except ours. Everyone else was offered tea except us. So my friend asked the waitress for tea. She just looked at over and continued doing what she was doing. I don’t want to assume that they treated us differently because we were not Asian. It would be awful. When it was time for check out the ladies were all over the place and it seemed like they were complaining in their language. They did not bother to acknowledge that we were standing there. After standing there for about 10 minutes, One lady gave me my receipt and specifically told me to write down my tip on the tip area of the receipt. I couldn’t believe what she was telling me to do. I was never serviced and I was given a water cup that was half full, and nobody came by to give me a refill the entire time I was there so naturally I was upset and I didn’t leave a tip. My friend was told that she needed to give a tip because I didn’t give one. I have visited so many restaurants in Houston, and I can honestly say this was a first. Are they are making a lot of money that they feel like they can treat people bad and don’t need additional customers? They have a duck meat display.... maybe that’s what keeps their business afloat because their customer service...
Read moreWe have been a loyal customer since the day it has been open I think they need to expand the restaurant because sometime that place get absolutely full because the duck is very crispy and meaty and the fried pork chicharrones is so delicious :-)! But I do admit that they should not push out the customer to leave that is very rude because if other customer coming in and not only that they need to be more friendlier and attentive and paid attention! One of the waitress was not paying attention and hit my head while walking by with dishes and the same waitress turn around pour water into my Sprite drink that I did not even halfway finished yet :-(! And they also forgot my order of chicharrones we were panicking that we're not going to get any even though we order in advance on the phone:-(! That is the reason why we go there we live far away and I know there are many Chinese restaurant in Chinatown to eat at that we normally do go to but we love this place for the duck especially and chicharrones which is fried pork skin with pork meat so world's delicious so much...
