Came here for the first time four days ago on Saturday because I was craving some beignets. Reason why I'm giving this restaurant 1 star:
I was not greeted upon walk in. The employees continued to glance, continue talking and laughing, and did not say a word to me. I stood at the counter for almost 4 minutes and right when I told myself to leave and go elsewhere, was when an employee came around to take my order.
No one apologized for the wait. No one apologized for keeping me waiting or even acknowledged that I was waiting for almost five minutes before being attended to. This is a pretty small coffee shop so they saw me. We locked eyes several times.
There was a stark difference in how I was treated versus the rest of the customers. Everyone in the restaurant looked like them and I observed how the employees treated them. They were very kind and attentive. Not sure what it was about me that made them treat me differently; actually I do believe I know what it is which is why I'll never come back here.
They charge you 3 percent of your entire order if you pay with a card and not cash. Mind you, there is no sign or anything advising of this extra fee which I feel like is sneaky and unethical. I had cash in my car and had I known there was a fee for using my card, I would've just went back to my car and paid in cash. Charging customers extra fees without informing them is stealing. Plain and simple.
They refused to touch the buzzer when I attempted to hand it over to them to get my order when was ready. They acted like I had some kind of disease and no one wanted to touch it so I simply slid it on the counter and grabbed my order. No one told me to please come back and visit them again, have a great day, or anything. They just walked off after I took my order. These people here are so rude, my goodness.
All in all, were the beignets good? Sure. I'd actually give the beignets itself a sold 9/10- some of the best beignets I have ever tasted. But would I be back to this establishment? Absolutely not. And I will be sure to tell others who look like me to...
Read moreHOW Chez Beignets have made it all these years is anyone's guess, although I surmise to think its because this is the only beignet place in Chinatown, and, grudingly, they do put out an excellent product.
It's an odd combination. The German couple who own Chez are, by far, THE MOST RUDE, CONDESCENDING turds I've ever met in retail food. I came in here five years ago in the summer with a friend wearing a tank top. The German owner SCREAMED at him, "go put on another shirt!!! We don't allow tank tops in here!!!" My friend pointed to a short, very good looking Vietnamese girl wearing a tank top. German owner: "SHES FEMALE! GET OUT!" We left.
That being said, and in all fairness, the product they sell is absolutely * excellent. * The beignets are phenom, cafe au lait is Cafe Dumond great.
Question is, is it worth it? Since they are the only game in town, the answer is yes.
I take a number of clients here for beignets and every time I walk in I get the evil eye from the German couple, but I don't think they remember me ;-)
If you do decided to patronize Chez, make sure you don't wear a tank top in the summer, don't make eye contact with the screwball owners and...
Read moreSo we didn't come here before, and my dad wanted us to try it, but he got thirsty and told me to get a smoothie from the restaurant next store. (because Chez Beignets didn't actually sell anything he wanted to drink) When I came back, my sisters left to another store (boba zone) a few stores down to buy a drink also. We were eating our beignets when a worker came and said his owner didn't want people to drink other drinks from other places. So we thought it'll be okay to put the drinks aside. Then the owner came over a few minutes later saying "I know you guys know you aren't suppose to bring drinks from other places here please put it away." We didn't have anywhere to put it so we decided to put in on the floor on the side. Barely 1 minute passed and he came back screaming "IM SICK AND TIRED OF SAYING THE SAME THINGS OVER AND OVER. YOU CAN'T HAVE THE DRINKS ON THE FLOOR. PLEASE PUT YOUR DRINKS IN YOUR CAR." So finally we went to put it up and he just stood next to our table and watched us til we came back with no drinks. Never coming back, I understand if he didn't like us bringing drinks from other places, but he didn't have to...
