The Balkan Grill serves up a variety of items, such as: appetizers (baba ghanouj, hummus, burek (homemade phyllo pastry dough filled with either beef/cheese/spinach/potato & zuchinni); salads; specialties (cevapcici, Bosnia burger (pljeskavica), adana burger, veggie/steak/grilled chicken sandwiches, raznjici (grilled & spiced meat with fries), pikata chicken schnitzel, fish of the day (such as trout and tilapia), and mixed grill platters. They also have desserts, fresh 'ayran' yogurt beverages, as well as other Turkish cold beverages in bottles/cans. The place is small and has about 9 seats; two sets of counters and one table that seats 2. Mr. Byron was at the cashier, but he also helps out in the back - quiet, but very kind and friendly! The adana burger was pretty good - the ground meat patty had a slight kick to it, but it was flavorful; it comes with a side of sliced onions and tomatoes, and there is a yogurt and a hot sauce that you can use to spruce it up. The beef donor sandwich was also good - sliced thinly, like gyro meat, pretty okay flavor, and good with the yogurt sauce. The sliced onions within made it nice and fresh. I really really loved their bread - freshly-baked, right out of the oven, it was nice and soft, and was great in holding in all the meat and veggies. I really enjoyed the sauteed eggplant, as it was tomato-based, but had great garlic/olive oil flavor to it (great with the bread!). They also have daily weekday specials that comes with a can of soda (Monday is for shish kabobs; Tuesday is for the mixed grill platter; Wednesday is for the pikata chicken schnitzel; Thursday is for the moussaka; and, Friday is the 'fish...
Read moreI randomly decided to give this place a try after leaving the nail salon next door and after seeing a good rating I wandered in and picked something off the menu that is similar to other dishes I have had (chicken shish kebab) and patiently waited for my food which took just shy of 15 minutes. The first thing I noticed was how clean everything was, even down to behind the counter and the freezer they keep additional food in. All very neat and orderly. The staff was nice offered me two house made sauces to go along with my food when I asked for sauce but had no idea what to ask for. I was immediately impressed with how neatly the food was packed and surprised to find that my dish and side salad was separately packaged and it was clearly done so to keep the freshness and flavor of the food in mind also cleanliness. The salad was INCREDIBLY fresh and had an amazing flavor. I was surprised assuming it was just a container of fresh veggies and instead a beautifully made salad. The rice and chicken kebab tasted beautiful if you could ever describe a plate of food that way. I love the fact that it tasted fresh and home cooked. A person who is not a foodie like myself might say it tastes “normal” however I know the benefit of food that has a fresh, natural, home cooked taste rather than something over seasoned and overdone in the hopes to over prove how “Mediterranean” it is. The meal I got from here even though so simple made me feel like I was at a quaint restaurant in the Mediterranean and was so simply executed that it was PERFECTION. I am glad to say there isn’t a single morsel of food left and I can’t wait to try more from here...
Read moreWarning: BALKAN GRILL HAS THE BEST CHICKEN SANDWHICH
Fist thing first I would like to say that this establishment has the best Chicken Sandwhich I have ever had. I come to this restaurant in Alexandria Va at the very least 2x a month and have been ever since I moved to Alexandria. Completely mind blown at how delicious this sandwhich is every single time. The dressing is so rich and rare. The bread is one of kind. I have never seen or eaten anything like it. The chicken is seasoned and cooked perfectly. So juicy and tender. Truly a one of kind sandwhich that I know I will never find anywhere else in the world. The Baklava is so rich and light and full of flavor. Such a rare desert that is not easy to come by. Balkan Grill is so Authentic and I now appreciate this cultures type of food. A friend of mine Timur informed me that he believes this restaurants food is from Turkey but I’m not 100%. I just want to say thank you and give my respects to the owner and employees for the authentic food and amazing customer service satisfaction each and every single time I order. Keep up the hard work and Happy New Years!
