Two of us had a late lunch at the Metro Diner.
The decor is attractive. It is reminiscent of a diner from the '50's and seems well done.
A large blackboard announces daily specials, desserts, soup of the day, etc.
Breakfast is available for lunch. I was tempted to get a Belgian Waffle. The breakfast menu available was more extensive than I anticipated and undoubtedly worth trying.
I opted instead for the French Dip sandwich and my dining companion had a turkey dinner with mashed potatoes and green beans.
The quality of the French dip sandwich was good. The bread was fresh. The meat also seemed fresh but was very salty. The au jus with the sandwich was even more salty so one bite of the au jus with the sandwich was overwhelming.
On a previous visit I ordered the Shepherd's pie and the excessive salt problem was evident with that as well.
The turkey was a good quality as well. The mashed potatoes and gravy were like a Sunday dinner with my parents—large quantity, good quality and lots of carbs.
On our most recent visit, we split an order of Shepherd's pie--in honor of it being St. Patrick's Day. The dish was served very hot, with cheese on top and it was not too salty.
Perhaps the amount of salt depends on who is doing the preparation. Many Americans appear to like lots of salt despite the health considerations or its ability to be the primary taste of the food.. I much prefer a person being able to add salt as they see fit rather than having the salt just dominate the flavor.
So, overall, a good experience. Lunch for two with iced tea came to about $32 plus a tip which is a little more expensive than one might expect from a diner but overall the quality was very good and would have been very good if not for the...
Read moreJust had a very nice Sunday visit at The Metro Diner. We arrived around 9:45 and the three of us got sat right away, however, the restaurant did fill up shortly after our arrival and there were still people waiting for tables when we left at 11. Our server, Allie I believe, was very attentive and did a great job explaining the menu to my uncle that was visiting us from out of town.
My uncle ordered the special which was The Crab Florentine: Two crab cakes, each on half of an English muffin, topped with a poached egg and a side of hash browns. He claims that his meal was 'egg'ceptional!
I ordered the Three Egg Breakfast: Three eggs cooked however you like them, I requested mine over hard; included was hash browns, toast (grape and strawberry jelly included), and your choice of breakfast meat (I had three slices of bacon). I also ordered the coffee special which was French vanilla today.
Can't remember what Dad ordered, but I ate every bit of my meal. The eggs over hard were cooked to perfection along with the bacon, not too crisp but not chewy either. The hash browns were nice as well, though they could've been browned a little further (the middle was slightly mushier than I'd prefer). The toast was, well, toast, and the prepackaged jellies were exactly what you'd expect. My French vanilla coffee was great with just a single packet of sugar, no cream.
Overall this was an excellent second trip to The Metro Diner for breakfast. The food and drinks were great, as was the service. The manager even stopped by our table multiple times to make sure our meals were correct and to ensure that we were enjoying ourselves! Would absolutely recommend this restaurant for a tasty breakfast and an opportunity to visit with an out of town...
Read moreThis is my new favorite diner & breakfast all day type restaurant in Huntsville, hands down! Before I get started on everything great about Metro Diner, I'm gonna get the one complaint I have out of the way. The only thing I can fault them on is the location/signage. I passed by this place almost every day and never really knew what it was. It's tucked away in a shopping center with a sign that doesn't really stand out of signify a diner. Other than that minor issue, everything else was EXCELLENT! So far, I've visited Metro 3 times, and it just keeps getting better! The first time I go to any nearby restaurant, I order something extremely simple. If the place can't get something like eggs, bacon, waffles, hashbrowns, etc, right, it's almost a certainty they won't get more involved dishes, correct? The eggs, bacon, hashbrowns, biscuits, and grits here were done perfectly with what tasted like quality ingredients. I sat right next to the kitchen the first time, so I know that's run properly and cleanly. The second time, I had what my kind waitress recommended (the lemon/blueberry waffles), and it was EXCELLENT! The way they baked in the blueberries and the lemon sauce on top with a big scoop of blueberry and lemon infused butter was nirvana on a dish! Soooo good! The next two times, I kept trying different dishes, and everything was done to perfection! Can't say enough good things about the food at Metro! Along with the food, the atmosphere is accommodating and the staff is extremely kind and helpful! This place is now officially my go-to breakfast and lunch spot...
