It’s a small drive thru with some interior service. Terrible customer care.
To be fair, I was on a special diet of no cheese or pork. So I ordered the Huevos Rancheros with no cheese or bacon and also no tortillas. I paid full price for the plate of fried egg and beans plus paid extra for a side of guacamole.
The gal apparently gave my guac side to my hubby next to his carne asada plate by mistake.
I only know this because I went back to the counter to ask for my guacamole (fried egg and side of beans is pretty dry/tasteless without something added 😅) Anyway, same gal who took our order/payment and delivered our meal told me my husband should not have eaten the very small side of guac she put next to his carne asada plate, that it was the one i had paid for. And when i said asada plates should also have guac, she actually responded that at this restaurant they put the guac underneath the meat and that if he had checked underneath first he would have seen some already on his plate!? No responsibility that SHE gave him my side of guac instead of me.
Normally this would only be mildly irritating even with blood sugar low from the special medical diet, but her attitude towards me was as if I was trying to get away with something, as if they hadn't already saved money on the meat, tortillas and cheese from me as she kept repeating that I would have to pay another two dollars again if I wanted the tiny (and tasteless!) ketchup sized guacamole on my dry eggs and beans.
More disrespectful to me was that she asked another employee to come over to repeat to me her decision that I should pay again for any "guacamole" i pit on my order, talking in front of me and about me in Spanish as if I wasn't there or couldn't understand, despite the polite young man suggesting to her that they just give me a bit of guacamole and let me eat without having to ring up a whole nee order for the side if guacamole.
I know this because I'm the daughter of a Cuban mother and fluent in Spanish even though I'm blonde. I got my wallet, went back to the counter to get the topping for my now cold plate of food. And am annoyed enough to leave this review that’s larger than...
Read moreMediocre, or bad, Mexican food does exist. It's blue (but not yellow) lobster rare and unmistakable if encountered. Unfortunately, when I visited El Jinete's drive-through late on a Tuesday night, lackluster was what I received.
I was the only one ordering via the drive-through. I didn't pay attention to inside and am not sure how busy it was, but I do remember hearing other customers.
I tried the "asada frieds." A dish representing the coming-together of cultures that actually works—like "curry pizza" or "spam musubi." Good places for carne asada fries exist throughout Southern California. Anyone who'd like to make a version should use the ones coming out of there as benchmark.
Apparently, El Jinete didn't. Their effort fell flat. The beef, instead of supporting the entire ensemble, turned into under-seasoned cubes. Fries were done right and crispy (easy stuff), but on the smaller side. I asked for hot sauce—no kick. I'd bought an horchata drink—felt watered down. Finally, a reveal: I was pitifully hungry, which should've enhanced most meals to be extra appealing/delicious. Yet, even that didn't help the underwhelming...
Read moreThis place had some big shoes to fill, due to the fact that this location used to be Lupita's, which has since moved to a bigger location in town and exploded in popularity. The twist here is, I think I like El Jinete's food more than I ever liked Lupita's. Granted, El Jinete does not offer table service like they do, the tradeoff being is that El Jinete is not very busy and prepares your order comparatively quickly. I've tried the "wet", california, and breakfast burritos, chimichanga, rolled tacos (great guacamole) But the final thing that really made me say "woah", was when I tried the street tacos. No offense to Teotihuacan, formerly lil wagon tacos - but El Jinete might have bested you, or at the very least rivaled you - which should come as a surprise, considering that it is the item that propelled them from a small food truck to a retail storefront in town. My only complaint is that when I turned up for breakfast during the posted hours on the door one day, it was closed. for that I subtract one star. However, I recommend you give El...
