Helm coffee would be perfect if Shelby street weren't so dangerous and loud! The coffee shop has a variety of seating, amazing pastries, and excellent coffee. Service is friendly and prompt, they're clearly a business dedicated to sustainability and community.
When the weather is nice, Helm will open the garage door to let the air in. But it faces Shelby Street, where the most people go 50. There are semi trucks every few minutes, not to mention tons of unnecessarily loud cars. (People who are too good for mufflers, people trying to burst your ear drums with their bass...) Helm's hard walls and hard floor magnify all that road noise, and if you sit close to the front you get to smell the diesel.
The road makes it harder to access the coffee shop by car, too. Taking a left into their lot is taking your life into your hands. You're better off taking a right into the lot, but then you have to go through the light at Raymond and Shelby and that intersection is a dangerous mess - I've seen several people run the backed up red light by using the left turn only lane.
Obviously, bad city planning is not their fault. There's not many places in the Garfield Park neighborhood where you can have a business that isn't on a giant, loud, scary road. I'm glad they're in the neighborhood and running such an excellent shop. I wish for their sake there was something that could be done to make the immediate surroundings safer and more pleasant for their neighbors...
Read moreVisited Helm Coffee on a recent trip to Indianapolis and absolutely fell in love with the place. The vibe in the coffee shop is top notch and a large garage door facade brightens up the space well. There are cozy seating arrangements available at Helm and we opted to have our coffee at the shop and enjoy the space.
To the left of the space is the counter where ordering can be done; to the right hand side is the coffee roasting station.
The staff was warm and inviting and made the trip all that much more enjoyable. I opted for a maple latte which was crafted with precision and was absolutely delicious. My two travel partners each had a cup of coffee which was freshly brewed while we were ordering and refills of the drip coffee while there only run $1. In addition to our coffee purchases enjoyed while there, I also purchased a bag of their freshly roasted coffee to bring home with me, as well. Can't wait to brew it up shortly!
If Helm Coffee was in my own local neighborhood, this would be the kind of place I could visit each day. If ever back in Indianapolis, I'll certainly be visiting Helm...
Read moreI drove like 40 minutes to get to this coffee shop because I heard their coffee was so good. Somehow, it was even better than I could have anticipated and the owner, Jill, is just a lovely person point who at one point literally pulled up a chair to talk shop with me and my buddy. The pour overs I got were made expertly, tasted wonderful, and delivered the advertised tasting notes to an almost shocking degree. The Ethiopian coffee tasted so strongly of blueberry that I couldn't help but imagine taking a bite of blueberry waffles every time I took a sip. Also, for those who enjoy matcha, this is one of the few shops that actually prepares it correctly with respect to its cultural origins rather than...
