La Cantina is a popular Mexican restaurant in a relatively uncluttered area of Northeast Indianapolis (i.e. uncluttered by other restaurants). The atmosphere is pretty good in a fairly typical Mexican restaurant way. Good music, colourful decorations, nice aromas, even decorations in the restrooms. On the downside, a couple in our group were underwhelmed with the freshness of the vegetables and the "cookedness" of the chicken. The tostaguac (tostada+guacamole) that I got was quite good, nevertheless, as was the Horchata cinnamon drink. The service was friendly, almost bouncy, but a request for water, put in twice, no less, was completely forgotten. My friends, who are more regular La Cantina customers than I am, felt that things had fallen off a bit. Pro Tip There is an area to eat outside but it is pretty directly exposed to sunlight and the elements so choose a cloudy day or early autumn or late spring. Or eat inside, I suppose.

Back to La Cantina for a late lunch around 2 PM — surprisingly busy, with about a third of the tables full. Parking is easy, with plenty of spots and two handicap spaces right up front. Inside, the AC keeps it cool, the drinks are cold, and you’ve got your pick of booths, tables, bar seating, or outdoor dining. They start you off with complimentary chips and salsa, which hit the spot while you look over the large menu of Mexican staples. I went with the Texas Fajita — a sizzling combo of chicken, steak, shrimp, grilled tomatoes, onions, and green peppers. It comes with three soft flour tortillas (trust me, you’ll want at least six), plus a loaded side plate of shredded lettuce, pico, guac, sour cream, and refried beans. Fast, friendly service and consistently good food make this one of my go-to spots when I’m craving something south of the border.

I just called to order my food and the lady just hung up on me! That was rude and disrespectful. She just kept hanging up the phone, like if you don’t understand English then just give someone else the phone who understands. Rude service! I called again ordering from their menu online. Their online prices does not match the prices they have in the restaurant. The meal I ordered was 11.99 and when I went to pick it up it was 19.99, Giving much false advertisement. SMH so I let that slide because the same lady being rude on the phone said they were in a process of changing the computers blah blah blah, so I paid 40.00 for two meals and the food was cold. Worst place ever! Photo of the name of the server

First, I'll admit I'm a little freaky about margaritas...which is why I probably shouldn't have ordered the house margarita. The aroma, and the flavor, reminded me of Pine Sol somehow. But the first problem was encountering a wall when entering with no sign as to whether I should wait for someone to seat me or seat myself. Being the pro-active person I am, I asked the nearest seated customer, who politely told me she'd seated herself, so I did the same, only to be told by a waiter who suddenly appeared that the seat was prohibited and I was offered the next booth, which was ok by me. At least someone finally told me where I was allowed to sit. The next problem, after the margarita and the wall, was the salty, and oddly lumpy, guacamole. Then came the chimichanga. Again, probably my fault for ordering a steak chimi when I usually order ground beef, but ground beef wasn't on the menu. I just didn't like the flavor and the dough was...doughy. Chimichangas used to be crispy, which is why I liked them, but that's changed over the years. Maybe I should have ordered the fajitas. The rice and refried beans were good. When the waiter asked how everything was, I asked for a box for the lefovers. Long minutes later, he returned...and asked if he could take the mess away. I reminded him I was waiting for a box. I'll be back, simply to try a different margarita, but it won't be until warmer weather, and only because the outside seating looked...

Decent food. Not great and there are too many other options to bother with not great Mexican food. Service was provided but it was somewhat grudging from our actual server. I think a manager came out and helped a couple of times and she did it with a smile. Our main guy really seemed like he didn't want to be there.

My biggest issue is the lock on the bathroom stall didn't work and another patron walked in on me. I didn't realize it hadn't locked. After I tried repeatedly to see if it was just user error. Nope, it would not lock. It's a bar lock and the door stays closed so you don't realize the bar didn't slip in unless you check it. This was yesterday I hope they've either fixed it since we let them know it was an issue or put a sign up.

Prices are moderate, location is decent if you live, work or spend time on that side of town. The place was clean.

A standout moment, other than the bathroom, I had issues with my food. They put a red sauce on it that wasn't mentioned in the listing and I just didn't like. They replaced the entire plate with little more than a question or two as to why so they could bring it out the way I wanted it. This I definitely appreciated. No arguing and they brought it out quickly.

Overall average experience. I probably won't go back as this was my second time and I was equally underwhelmed the first time, but I wouldn't discourage someone who lives or works in the area from giving it a try...

When we walked through the door, we were greeted and seated before the door shut behind me. It was a Friday evening around 8pm and they were pretty busy. Within 90 seconds of sitting down, the young lady who was helping with chips and salsa had fresh, hot chips and amazing salsa on our table. Our waitress was right behind her to take our drink orders. Since this was my first visit, I took an extra couple minutes looking at the menu before I decided on the special. Once we had ordered, our food was on our table in less than 10 minutes. Everything was delicious, especially the salsa! I am a HUGE fan of cilantro so if you arent, this salsa isn't for you. I had a view of the kitchen from my seat and it was SPOTLESS!! It all seemed too perfect so I tried to find something that looked out of place but failed. You can tell these people take their jobs seriously and take pride in their work. The ONLY complaint I had was with my sweet tea. Skip the sweet tea unless you're a fan of sugar water. It was WAYYY too weak. Not a problem, I had my tea switched to coke before I could unwrap my straw. The service during our meal was awesome! Our chips and salsa never got below half before the lady either refreshed them or asked if we wanted more (towards the end of our meal). Our waitress checked on us 4 times after she brought our food. I can't say enough about this place and I will defiantly be back. I highly...
