SOOO ME AND MY SISTER WENT TO THE WOOD ON 10/31/2023 TACO TUESDAY BEING OUR FIRST TIME AND CLOSE TO HOME DECIDED TO GIVE A TRY. WHEN WE GOT THERE WAS SEATED IMMEDIATELY AND WAS GREETED WITH GOOD CUSTOMER SERVICE, AFTER ORDERING 2 DRINK S FOR 10 DOLLARS A PIECE THE SERVER TELLS US OH ITS A TACO TUESDAY PROMO GOING ON SINCE WE BROUGHT 2 DRINKS WE CAN ADD 2 TACOS AS A COMBO AND THE PRICE IS EVERYTHING 5 DOLLARS MEANING 2 TACOS PLUS A DRINK 5 DOLLARS . SO ME AND MY SISTER ORDER 2 DRINKS A PIECE AND 2 TACOS A PIECE ADDING UP TO 4 DRINK AND 4 TACOS AT 20 DOLLARS PLUS TAX. WE ALSO ASKE OUR SECOND SERVER WHICH WAS A GUY, HOW DOES THE PROMO WORK AND HE STATED BUY 1 DRINK 2 TACOS COMBO AT 5 DOLLARS, WHY WHEN WE GET THE BILL ITS 75 DOLLARS??? SO I ASKED THE WAITER THAT SERVED US , I ASKED I THOUGHT U SAID 1 DRINK 2 TACOS 5 DOLLARS, WHY IS MY BILL 75 DOLLARS FOR 4 DRINKS 4 TACOS???? SHE GOES OH NO 75 DOLLARS? THATS WRONG LET ME GET MY MANAGER, SO SHE CALLED A MANAGER ABOUT MY BILL AND THE MANAGER WAS RUDE AND DID NOT LISTEN TO ME AS I WAS TRYING TO EXPLAIN THE SITUATION AND SHE STATED OH NO THATS TO MUCH ALCOHOL TO GIVE AWAY AS A 1 DRINK 2 TACO FOR 5 DOLLARS , SO I THEN SAID WELL YOUR SERVERS DIDNT EXPLAIN THAT AND IM NOT PAYING 75 DOLARS AND SHE WOULDN'T LET ME OR MY SISTER TALK KEPT TALKING OVER MY SISTER INTERUPTING HER, THEN THE MANAGER THEN STAYED LET ME GET THE MANAGER MIND U SHE STATED SHE WAS THE MANAGER SMH SO THE SECOND SO CALLED MANAGER COMES AND SAYS OH NO YALL ATE THE FOOD AND DRANK THE DRINKS YALL GOTTA PAY MIND U WE DIDNT MIND PAYING ITS WAS THE FACT THAT I WANTED TO BE ACCOMMODATED FOR THE MISCOMMUNICATION TOTALLY DIS APPOINTED AT THE WOOD

AND THEY HAD THE NERVE TO SAY WE WAS TOLD THIS BEFORE WE ORDERED UMMM NO WE WASNT TOLD THIS BEFORE WE ORDERED BECAUSE WE WOULD NOT HAVE ORDERED YALL BE CAREFUL THEY WILL TRY TO OVER PRICE YOU AND THEY TACO TUESDAY PROMO AND FLYER...

An unusually bad experience. We got in touch ahead of time in order to discuss eating at the space for an event. The manager said it was fine. Then we heard from the owner the day of who was condescending about the event we were trying to have, worried that we would take up space for bigger events. We worked it out where we could still come, and it’s probably a good thing for their business that we did, as we were the majority of the customers during that time.

The service was awful. The waitress had the nastiest attitude. Unbelievably bad for no reason. She was nasty as soon as I came in the door and my group was eating, literally just sitting there quietly. Then she proceeded to be nasty the whole time except to the two other parties she was serving who were not a part of our group. She is honestly the worst and most unpleasant server I’ve ever had the displeasure of being in the same room as.

The food also is not particularly good. I can’t speak to the drinks as I did not have one.

I am holding back on this review a bit because it’s a Black owned business. Ultimately we were able to have our event there and the atmosphere is pretty good. But the female server was honestly the worst I’ve ever come across and the food is subpar.

You all never know who you’re serving or who knows who. Best to put your best foot forward at all times.

Re: I have screenshots of our conversations that would prove otherwise. We had a representative go to the Wood in person to confirm our event. We were confirmed on Wednesday October 16th 2024 around 9 PM. But all this was already hashed out on the phone and discussed the day of the event. My group can’t be responsible for miscommunication between your staff and ownership. But again this had already been discussed. I come to The Wood before every event at SoFi, Kia Forum, Intuit Dome, etc. and I try to bring a new person whenever I come. The employees are always so friendly and welcoming - from security at the front to all of the wait staff and bussers.

So far, I’ve tried the chicken, rib tips, brisket, and chicken breast sandwich. For sides, the street corn, mac and cheese, collard greens, potato salad, and cornbread. Everything has been delicious! The BBQ sauce has the slightest spice to it, making it a great complement to the sweetness. (Just writing that made me crave it again. 😜)

Sitting outside is a treat. The patio is clean and bright with TVs always showing current football games. All of Market Street is so cute with a small town feel. Like the rest of California, high rents have forced out a lot of businesses, leaving many storefronts vacant. Establishments like the Wood are helping to revive the historic stretch, and sitting on the patio is great people watching.

They even have a live DJ who always plays the best mix to have you dancing in your seat. Some restaurants play live music at a deafening level so you can’t carry on a conversation. That’s not the case here.

I’ve saved the best for last and her name is April (like the month 😉.) Every server I’ve had here has been outgoing and friendly, but April takes the cake. I took my uncle out for a special event dinner on Saturday night and April kicked off the evening making him smile and laugh. She is such a treasure.

Finally, the Wood is a black-owned business, which is important to us. With all of the surrounding corporate chains, please consider supporting a restaurant that serves the community where it’s located. Your happy belly...
