A Decent Doubles Spot!
Salim's is a small, cozy spot that offers a glimpse into Caribbean flavors. I visited last weekend to try their doubles and found the overall experience to be a solid 4 out of 5 stars.
The atmosphere is laid-back, with a few basic Caribbean snacks and drinks available, and some seating for those waiting for their orders. I was particularly impressed by how clean the kitchen area appeared – a definite plus!
Now, onto the star of the show: the doubles. I'd rate them a 3.5 out of 5 for taste. They were good, but didn't quite hit that spot. I'll try a different combination next time.
My visit wasn't entirely seamless, though. After placing my order, there was a bit of a mix-up, and someone else had to retake it and prepare it. This wasn't a huge deal, but it did add a slight delay. Also, there were no napkins provided with the food, which can be a bit messy when eating doubles – thankfully, I had wipes in my car. Finally, I was a little surprised to see a card processing fee on my receipt without any prior notification. While these fees are becoming more common, it's always helpful to be informed beforehand.
Despite these small issues, I'm already planning my next visit for next week. I'm intrigued by the masala apple on the menu and can't wait to try their roti!
Edit:
I recently revisited this spot, intending to try the duck roti, but ended up going for the goat instead – and I'm so glad I did!
Their roti is 100% on point. The dhalpuri, in particular, is a standout; the split peas are perfectly seasoned, and you can even see the bhandania, a clear sign of authenticity. The roti itself is impressive, appriximately 16-18 inches. Even with its generous size, it was not enough to scoop up the generous portions of delicious curried goat, channa and aloo, pumpkin, and masala apple. The flavors are so good, I literally had to pause my meal (getting my phone a little messy in the process!) just to call a friend and rave about how authentic and tasty everything was. This is definitely an authentic Trini taste experience. Next time I'll have to order an extra roti on the side
I'm already planning my next visit to try their Chinese style offerings and will be sure to update my...
Read moreLet’s start here food. The food was flavorful, but the lack of sufficient meets to potato and filling ratio was horrible. I ordered three roti dinners to go one duck one chicken the duck I had more bones than duck meat and more potatoes than duck the goat I may have had three pieces of goat and a plate full of potatoes with a dollop of pumpkin pie on the side and seasoned mango on the side of Doop $20 each tray. Curry chicken I had three small hunks of chicken and a massive amount of potatoes and filling to the curry same two dollop of sides with the roti the roti was excellent and that’s about all. I could say their proportions seem large because of the amount of potatoes, but the meat that you get is useless you might as well just order a potato roti because you don’t have enough meat to...
Read moreThis place is family oriented, its community, it's a blessing, and more importantly, it's legendary. The hospitality, love, patience, and all thee above all while grabbing some good Grub, doubles, and just island fun. One word, SPECTACULAR! Blessings to Salim's Hot and Tasty. It was that and so much more. I forewarn that the popularity, taste, and overall esthetics of what the taste and experience brings means popular items may go faster, but the great thing is, they're here and there will be here, so join in, and get what you can while supplies last. Thank you...
