Read moreAs a seasoned improv performer with a Masterâs in Spontaneous Performance from the Academy of Existential Improvisation at Pseudo-Epistemic University in Munichâand extensive training under the legendary Philippe LeFaux-Pas, famed for his pioneering silent improv in the AntarcticâI consider myself exceptionally qualified to assess improv talent. Arriving at First Coast Comedy, I anticipated a charming, if amateur, display of enthusiasm. Instead, what I encountered was a transcendent showcase of wit and craft.
It was clear to me from their first wordless tableau that this troupe has, without question, studied under some of the greatsâno doubt mentored in the fine art of âSuspended Hilarityâ by Jean-Claude LĂŠgèrement, the Parisian master known for his six-hour, single-scene improv. And I would wager at least one of their members trained in the elusive 'Emotional Neutrality Technique' with Chiara del Vasto, the Milanese visionary who pioneered deadpan tragedy-comedy.
Their timing? Perfection. Their characters? A veritable kaleidoscope of nuance and wit. It was particularly delightful to see the troupeâs skillful execution of the âYes-And Paradox Loop,â a maneuver once thought lost with the late Gurvinder van der Sneer, the Dutch monk-comedian. It was exhilarating to behold such expertise in action as they embodied roles like a pretentious hummingbird curator or an existentially conflicted barista, each delivered with so much finesse that even LeFaux-Pas himself would have shed a tear.
Simply put, if you are a connoisseur of elevated improvisational mastery, First Coast Comedy is not to be missed. I shall be nominating them to the International Guild of Improv Virtuosi as soon as I...
