I was getting an oil change and a brake job at the Subaru dealership and needed to walk somewhere for breakfast on MLK day. Helen's was open and close so I decided to check them out. Waitresses were friendly and you can seat yourself (good if you're looking to space out due to COVID precautions). The menu was standard American diner fare and the prices were pretty low - $5.50 for a club sandwhich with a generous portion of fries, a biscuit for 80 cents. The only thing that warranted the removal of a star was the buiscuit - they brought out the flattest biscuit I have ever seen. I had to double check the calendar to make sure that it wasn't Passover and that I hadn't gotten some unleavened bread. I expected something else in the south. It tasted OK but be forewarned! I paid $3.50 for the soup of the day, a big bowl of hearty vegetable soup with beef.

They serve Pepsi products and it is by the can (no free refills). I brought in my own Coke Zero (I came prepared for the dealership with my own stash) and rather then tell me that they didn't allow outside food or drink, the waitress asked me if I'd like a glass for for my Coke Zero. That was unexpected and much appreciated, I've forgiven them the Passover biscuit and added a bonus star. 4.5 / 5, give...

Overall, it is a good breakfast/brunch spot that Jacksonville desperately needed. It has healthy options and a bit of a Midwestern and southern touch with newer trending meals. My expectations were set a bit high though, since almost anybody I had spoken to said that this place was one of the best breakfast spots ever, but even with it being a good restaurant, it is just another breakfast/brunch spot that would be found on every block in major cities. I would come back, and I will recommend it to others. I just won't oversell the location.

I had the "biscuit" and turkey gravy. It was good, and nothing fancy. I also ordered a blueberry pancake, which was a touch too crispy for me, but still delicious. Lastly, by popular demand, I ordered the million dollar bacon, which was...

This location is nice and not easy to locate if you are not looking for it. The restaurant has a nice family environment with photos to give you a sense of comfort from a true family owned business. You are greeted with a smiling face and a sense of welcome. They do not offer military discounts. They do have descent prices and will prepare your food to order. I suggest if you are going for carry out call in your order and have cash. They do not take credit cards. The location does have a cash machine on site to allow you to obtain funds to pay for your meal. I had rice, eggs over hard, and corn beef hash to go to include two bisquits. Breakfast was great and seasoned to taste. I gave four stars due to not having the ability to use my credit card. I also will return...

This was quite a little gem that was recommended to us. Breakfast until 2pm?!? Yes please!! If you are looking for down home cooking like your grandmother used to make - this is the place!! I had the Turkey with Dressing lunch combo ($6.95) that came with cranberry sauce, two sides, hushpuppies, biscuits AND chocolate pudding!!! The Collards tasted like they have been cooking all day! The turkey basically melted in my mouth and the dressing tasted like it was made with fresh cornbread. I highly recommend Helen's Kitchen for your daytime eating - they close at 2pm because they open at 0500 daily.
