We are totally blown away by this excellent food. In JANESVILLE. YES, IN JANESVILLE, WI!!!
This restaurant is a HIGHLY RECOMMENDED, A DON'T-MISS-GEM of a Mexican restaurant! Really, really worth our drive from Madison! I cannot rate this place highly enough! So good, so flavorful! And the owner and his family are wonderful - so nice and providing great conversation and service. You MUST try this excellent food.
We tried several options - house salsa (creamy red, creamy green - YUM!) and chips, Red Pork Posole, Shrimp Taco, Rice, Refried Beans, and the amazing Mega Quesabirria. The homemade corn tortillas just add to the already incredible flavors. The food is nicely spiced, not at all salty, but you know that you are eating various fresh spices, spicy peppers, etc. I could taste all the different flavors. Some may find this to be on the spicy side, but it was perfect heat to me.
My shrimp taco was overflowing with 6 or 7 large shrimp, topped with a chipotle creamy salsa, resting in red shredded cabbage. The tasty surprise was the browned, toasty cheese grilled onto the tortilla. What flavor! The Posole was excellent - flavorful, served with lime, shredded lettuce, radishes, and those awesome tortillas. Just beautiful!
The hit was the Quesabirria. This came on a large pizza pan, with a pizza server. Two 14-inch flour tortillas, are stuffed with melted cheese and the juiciest, most tender, BEST birria that I've tried. It was grilled to a toasty, crispy, brown, and cut into wedges like a pizza - but so much better than any pizza! Biting into a piece, the juicy meat, melty cheese, crispy tortilla - heavenly! Accompanied by cilantro and chopped onion-covered Birria consomme. This is a MUST TRY.
Based on the owner's recommendations, and samples of pintos charros that he gave us, we ordered his takeout Grilled Chicken and Ribs dinner for tomorrow's eating. All beautifully packed in a box (which the owner carried to our car): A whole, spatchcocked, marinated and grilled chicken; grilled, spiced, pork ribs; a quart of rice; a quart of the charro beans; jalapeños toreados; an entire grilled white onion; two baked potatoes topped with chorizo; and more of those tortilla treasures for $39.99.
It is now Sunday morning, and guess what we are having for breakfast? A feast! I hear so many "yummy" noises coming from the kitchen, it's crazy!

Read moreWe visited Mexico en la Sangre for the first time today and it was all I had anticipated and more! We were greeted and seated by the older of Senor Pudilla's sons. He quickly brought a basket of house made tortilla chips with a green and a red (spicy) sauce. The tortilla chips are the best I have ever enjoyed. The red sauce is just spicy enough to give you the warm kick you crave. We ate every chip! I ordered a chicken and a steak Taco. The corn tortilla for the tacos is prepared in such a manner that it does not tear apart like all other tacos I've had. It is somewhat crisp as though grilled a bit. A delight to eat! The steak was cut in small dice, tender, and seasoned beautifully. The onions were minced making it pleasing to the eye and easy to eat. Even the fresh cilantro was chopped nicely to be pleasing. These seemingly small things are what make or break a dish and a restaurant!. Served with a lime wedge. Delicious! The chicken Taco held tender, shredded, seasoned chicken, grated cotijo cheese, and sliced white onion with a crema piped on top. So good! My lunch mate, husband Michael, ordered the seasoned pork Burrito. This is a nice big Burrito cut in half with the cut ends covered in crema. I did not try a bite but Mike said it was superb. He ate half and brought the other half home. Our entrees were served on china plates with real forks and knives. Hooray for this. I want to mention that the to go box is the nicer cardboard kind, which I prefer and not the foam. When I asked if dessert was available Senor Pudilla brought us each a plate with "cochinitor pan Mexicanus"! A Mexican treat bread new to me, in the shape of a pig!! It tasted like a graham cracker, a bit sweet and nicely spiced withbthebtexturebof biscotti. I would enjoy this at home with coffee or a glass of cold milk. We ate every bite! These Mexican entrees shine brighter than any other offerings in this area. The proprietor of all this goodness is Senor Pudilla. He puts heart and soul into this food and this space. One can just feel the love and attention to detail. Hard work is what it takes and his dedication and passion is evident. We were overjoyed to meet him today and wish he and his family every success. We cannot wait to go back again. And...

My wife and I recently dined at Mexico en La Sangre, and I have to say—it was an unforgettable experience from start to finish. This family-owned gem may be small, but it is impeccably well-kept, with a warm and welcoming atmosphere that immediately makes you feel at home.
The menu offers a wide variety of dishes, each one showcasing authentic, mouthwatering flavors. We decided to try the green Pozole, and it was nothing short of spectacular. The chicken was tender and flavorful, and the broth was rich with layers of taste that made each spoonful a delight. Every bite was like a taste of home, and you can tell that the food is made with love and care.
To kick things off, we were served freshly made chips and salsa, a perfect accompaniment to the meal. The salsa had just the right amount of heat, and the chips were crisp and fresh. We also tried the horchata to drink, which was the perfect balance of sweet and creamy—highly recommend it!
What truly stood out, aside from the food, was the genuine warmth of the service. The family atmosphere made the entire experience even more special. You can tell this place takes pride in not just the food, but in making every guest feel like part of their extended family.
If you're looking for delicious, authentic Mexican food made with care and passion, Mexico en La Sangre is an absolute must-visit. We can’t wait...
