Decent idea, abysmal execution
Service: Meh. The hostess was friendly, but didn't let us know who our server was (even though she kept coming back?). She also literally told us not to eat all our dessert... why is a hostess doing this? Our server was like a deer in headlights... she seemed afraid and didn't seem very professional. Overall, it was confusing as to who we were to order what from. At least they tried, at we tipped around 18% because the biggest issues were not their fault.
Drinks: Disappointing. There are no special cocktails, they only want to sell their mediocre beer and wines. All steakhouses of this price range I've ever been to have special cocktails. The beer and wine selection is more consistent with a lower price point.
Food: Oh boy. This is where it gets interesting. There are good ideas on the menu. The scallops sound good in theory, but in reality, were completely unseasoned, extremely unevenly cooked (very dark on one side and no color on the other), and extremely overcooked. I would happily pay for good scallops, but Wissota Chophouses' was a train wreck crossed with a dumpster fire. The icing on the cake? They tried to conceal the worst looking scallop by piling greens over it.
More food issues: The caesar salad was relatively low quality for the price, and more on par with Texas Roadhouse. The croutons have no flavor or seasoning. The oscar style crab cake is dense, mushy, doughy, and flavorless. The brussels sprouts are Sahara desert dry... it's dry overcooked parmesan with unseasoned and dry sprouts. And the worst - the expensive dry aged steak was overcooked on the outsides but raw in the center. They need to fire their "chef" immediately, as the main reason for the low rating is the absolute butchery of the food.
Other notes: The menu was wrong in at least a couple cases, about the kalamata olives on the salad (they were canned/jarred green olives instead) and the walnuts on the carrot cake (they were pecans isntead). They were out of asparagus, which is odd because we went rather early.
There's a general lack of detail to everything. You can go to, say, Ruth Chris, pay the same price, and get food that's 5 times as good, with absolutely stellar service on top of that. Wissota Chophouse is not delivering on the quality one would expect to get for the price they're charging.
Edit: I also directly emailed the restaurant the same day I originally posted this review and have never heard back. They already have my contact info. The fact that they're responding here asking for it is...
Read moreThe true rating is negative stars! My husband and I were looking forward to this night out. Unfortunately, this was possibly the worst dining experience we've ever had, primarily due to the service. For a place that markets itself as high quality and upscale, our waiter did not come close to meeting that mark. Likely, because we received service from the bartender. He appeared completely untrained to provide table service. He was awkward and acted like he had never worked in the restaurant area before, making our entire evening awkward and uncomfortable. We had to repeatedly ask for utensils because he did not bring enough for our soup, salad, or dessert. He did not refill our water glasses throughout the entire meal. He left used, dirty dishes on the table throughout the meal and these really piled up because we ordered several courses. At the very end, after dessert, he asked us if he could take some of the dishes but did not pick them up and instead asked us to hand him each piece. Halfway through our main course while we were still obviously eating and enjoying our meal, he asked us if he could bring some take home boxes for us. This was very poor timing and made us feel rushed even though there was only one other table at the restaurant. Every time he spoke to us, took our orders, etc he stood so far away from the table that we almost had to shout to have him hear us and we struggled to hear him. Our bill came to over $250+. I am fine with that in a fine dining establishment and have paid that many times at other places. However, the significant difference is that in those other restaurants, we've received impeccable service that is in proportion to that cost. We absolutely did not receive that and the entire evening was ruined because of the untrained staff and poor table service. The food was okay but overpriced for the main portions. The salad and sides were better in quality and taste. I did write two messages to notify the manager of this experience and received no response. I was not asking for anything except acknowledgement that the messages were received. Again, this is not customer service acceptable for this level of...
Read moreMy husband and I came here about three weeks ago and again tonight. Three weeks ago, our very first time coming here It was the best food we have ever had in Janesville. We had a sweet elder lady as our waitress and she took such great care of us. We went again tonight for our anniversary. We were looking forward to great food and service. We were sat next to a table with a lot of people instead of the room where it was quiet. We weren’t considered social distanced which was a concern my husband expressed. We got our appetizers which were delicious and we ordered our food. We both ordered steaks which weren’t how we ordered them. It made us a little disappointed but the waitress quickly got on it and said we would have our new steaks come out soon. I ordered the 6oz fillet while my husband ordered the 14 oz ribeye. The “new”steaks were brought to us and he ended up with a NY strip and I ended up with a burnt smashed up steak. It looked nothing like what we had ordered. We didn’t want to bother the waitress yet again so we just ate it even though it was not what we ordered. We got charged for three drinks instead of two sodas which we did not understand why but again did not want to cause any issues again to the waitress. We were charged an extreme amount of money for food we didn’t even order which was a big disappointment. I loved my first experience here. It made me so excited to spend my anniversary here again tonight, but led to a disappointment. I am giving Wissota Chophouse three stars because I truly can tell you that their food is amazing on a good day, but today just must have not been the day for us. We made the decision to not come back and we are both saddened but we do not want to experience another bad meal for nearly $200.00. I wish things turned out different tonight on such a special day for us, but things happen and we understand that completely. Please give this place a try if you can. I just wanted to be honest of my experiences here at...
