I had ordered a cake for my moms 96th Birthday at the Palatine location. All cakes are made in Chicago. When I went to pickup the cake it did not have the requested decorations and the greeting on the cake was almost clear. The manager in Palatine said there is nothing to be done and gave me a $10 discount. I was really upset. I called the Chicago branch and talked to the baker of my cake and explained how upset i was. She was very sympathetic and understood why i was upset. I said this might be my moms last birthday so I want a cake she will remember. About an hour later the manager from Palatine called and said that the Chicago bakery will bake her a fresh cake and decorate it the way it should have looked and deliver it to me before our party was to start. Read moreWow - can't wait to go back! When you enter you are greeted with a feast for the eyes of bulk pantry items, and unique ones as well! Kolatek has a variety of whole grains, flours, seeds, herbs, spices, teas, dried fruits, and edible flowers. Their organic produce is some of the best we had ever seen! And then there is the bakery - breads, pastries, cakes, cookies, all reasonably priced. We bought a spelt flour bapka (amazing flavor and perfect texture) and a 2lb loaf of whole grain bread (delicious), combined less than $5. The deli is a treat of Polish and Eastern European meats, spreads, smoked sausages, salads, vegetable dishes, and of course pierogi. Then there is the grocery store itself - a dry good and frozen foods culinary gift for those of us who don't live in Chicago! It is worth the drive! Bring your cooler. ...
Read moreAfter knowing about this place the last few years, I finally stopped in yesterday morning, convinced in part by all the positive reviews but also by the in-depth descriptions of the bread program here on Kolatek's website. As someone with some health issues that call for dietary restrictions, I really appreciate the detail and even the tips on the care and keeping of fresh bread! I found gluten free options, and many more, in this spacious, clean and well-appointed store. I love that I can buy hard-to-find flours here in bulk AND get pickles, smoked and cured meats, farm eggs, and so much more. This place will be in my regular grocery rotation from now on; who needs the big box "organic" stores when everything I need I can find between here and at Caputo's across...
