9/17/25 House of Wah Sun has wonderfully fried, sautéed, seasoned and pan seared food that offers something for everyone: From vegetarian options to meat dishes, to popular Eastern Chinese entrees and endless types of egg foo young, chicken and beef options. This restaurant is everything but your typical ho-hum Chinese restaurant. Their a Chinese restaurant that serves a variety of Chinese dishes with influences from Cantonese, Mandarin, and Scechwan cuisines. Even a touch of Koren flavors are infused into their dishes, so their entrees are exotic, eclectic, fresh, exciting and never boring. They even offer more "Americanized", straightforward dishes, like "chicken with peapods" and "sesame beef" to satisfy the pickiest eater. They have a killer selection of appetizers too, from traditional Chinese egg rolls, steamed dumplings and crab rangoon, to BBQ pork and fries. The only slight "downside" to this restaurant is their a little pricey, but that isn't their fault. Inflation does that and most restaurants are in the same boat anyway. House of Wah Sun's generous portions (enough for next day leftovers) and wide variety of dishes to choose from shine in comparison to a lot of restaurants. The biggest perk about this place is they saved my holiday last year. Not only were they open Christmas Eve, they were open Christmas Day too. Your not going to find that with ANY restaurant in Chicago. I was originally going to deduct a star because of the high prices, but the fact that do the public such a great service by being open on the holidays tip the scales. To summarize, their wide selection of eclectic dishes, large portions, being open during the Christmas season and having something for everyone is...
Read moreI was craving a honey walnut shrimp dish for my birthday dinner. I've had it at several other places, that for whatever reason when faced with the challenge of coming up with somewhere to order dinner for the family from completely escape my memory and then of course the task of coming up with somewhere to order from becomes one of the most pressure-filled decisions one must make.
I went to Grubhub and used honey shrimp as the search keyword and low and behold, House of Wah Sun pops up. Being the ultimate Yelp fan that I am, I based my big decision on the location with the highest reviews. Hate to say it, but I feel as though either my fellow Yelpers steered me wrong OR by comparison to the other places that came up, this one rose to the top. The latter option is just depressing because I was so underwhelmed and slightly disappointed with every single dish we ordered including my much discussed honey walnut shrimp.
Everything was very heavily breaded. My dish was way more greasy breading than shrimp. I'm not fooled by your bed of shredded iceberg lettuce. I know there isn't a ton of shrimp here and the sauce while is creamy as the description suggests is more or less mayonnaise with honey. Now I am educated enough to know that is exactly what the sauce is comprised of, but done well enough I shouldn't be able to come to that conclusion in the first bite. So I guess my search for a decent honey walnut...

Stale almond cookies, those seem to be very common.
Tomato pepper beef was chewy, tough to eat for my disabled friend with dentures, and not pleasant for me either.
Combo rice was huge, but really tasteless, the chicken, beef and shrimp were not so great.
Oh, yes, egg rolls. Typical cabbage filled, huge. Not impressed.
Tons of food, but only about two or three?! packets of soy sauce and hot mustard. That needed to have been about three times as much, especially because folks like to mix sweet and sour sauce and a little hot mustard for egg roll dipping.
It's not as good as it used to be oh, not by a long shot.
It all got returned, and Mister restaurateur does not love me nor did he appreciate commentary because, gee, he's been in business for years and years and years and nobody! Ever complained... Golly. I've only been eating and restaurants since I was 5 -- Mom was a waitress and cook; that's about 65 years worth of experience.
That only goes to support my theory that most of the American populace has no idea what food is really supposed to taste like. I have a better than just decent palette and a very good smell, taste, mouthfeel, overall food memory. How's yours?
For $33 + change I expect a whole hell of a lot more.
In a word: fehhh. So, who do You like for Chinese? DO share, please.
I may post this also on Yelp.
There you go. Have...
