El Gallo De Oro — Restaurant in Jersey City

Came in on a Saturday at around 2 pm for brunch with a Pulsd deal. The place was pretty empty but I'm not complaining because our server was extra attentive.

The deal was for two people - two brunch entrees, and 90 minutes of unlimited champagne, mimosas, Bellinis, margaritas, or bloody marias. Even though the champagne made my head hurt a bit, I still appreciated that there were a few extra options, other than your standard mimosas and bloody marys.

For entrees, there aren't too many options (with meat) to choose from. I ended up getting the taco salad with grilled chicken. This was way better than I expected it to be. The grilled chicken was not dry at all, everything else was fresh, and the cilantro lime dressing was the perfect complement to everything. The fried tortilla it came served in was really oily though, so I didn't eat most of that.

Wouldn't mind coming back...

It's a simple family run restaurant. Nothing here is fancy or Avant garde. But that's ok. Sometimes you want basic Mexican food. It was clean and only six tables. Went with two tweens who are picky eaters. They had beef tacos, shrimp frajitas &I had a chicken taco salad.The refried beans were a little bland. I usually request black beans and forgot to this time. That said everything else was delicious, reasonably priced & most telling of all is that these tweens made me promise to come back! And no there was nothing left to take home. Not perfect, but darn good. Initially, thought 4.5 stars but on balance 5 tells the story for me.

Well marinated. Good flavored authentic grub, in a well-loved, family - and date friendly space. Portions are plentiful, decor is nice overall. They have a cute corner in the restaurant, that's awesome for your social media pics.

Perhaps the restaurant isn't necessarily fancy nor Michelin, but they are delicious as can be. I'm always surprised at the places that you can taste in plate, just how much they care and are happy that you are there.

It's especially heartwarming to see the care in each plate, not once, but every time.
