So tonight we went to Chelly's for the first time. I like to try restaurants that aren't super big chains and I saw it Chelly's had a rating of 3.9 on Google so we gave it a shot. It was packed! I felt that was a good sign. We had to wait for about 20 minutes to be seated, which isn't a big deal. What was bothersome was we went about 10 minutes without even being acknowledged. The hostess did seem to keep track of people pretty well considering she didn't take names down. It was very confusing to not only my party but other parties coming in. I saw two parties leave after we got there because they had no idea how long the wait was.
After we sat down, we were waited on in a normal amount of time, we received our chips and salsa and ordered our drinks and ordered a cheese and chorizo dip. Both our drinks and appetizer came in a normal amount of time. First, the salsa was bland, with a slight burn, no flavor other than tomato and the slight burn feeling. The chorizo cheese dip was very good. It wasn't really a dip because it's so thick and stringy, but it was good! We scooped it on our plates and used a fork to chop it into pieces and ate it with our chips. It did come with 3 small corn tortillas, but those didn't last long. At this point, if we had stopped, I would have rated it a 4.
Only we continued to order. I ordered a Tex-mex chicken burrito that comes with rice, beans, lettuce, sour cream and guacamole. When I received it, the first thing I noticed was the rice looked dry and the beans looked like they were fresh out of a can. When tasted, both were very bland. My burrito looked ok, but the chicken inside was dry, tough and bland. I don't understand how chicken can taste so bland. Baked and grilled chicken both have flavor. Boiled chicken tastes bland to me, but I can't imagine they would put plain boiled chicken in a burrito with no seasoning? I ended up leaving all my chicken and just eating the tortilla with the cheese sauce and refried beans that were inside. I didn't eat my pinto beans or my rice. The lettuce also appeared to be dry and from a bag. I didn't bother to try it though. I don't care for guacamole, so I can't tell you what that tasted like.
My friend ordered a pork chimichanga (sp?) and he said the same thing about his food - bland, tasteless. Matter a fact, he looked at me and asked, "Why are there so many people here? This is awful."
My daughter ordered chicken fingers and fries and she loved them. She talked me into trying her chicken fingers because she loved them. Honestly, they were better than what I ate, which is sad.
Finally, we were done, forks were down and we sat there and waited for our check. Nobody came. We put money on the table, nobody came. Finally after about 20 minutes of waiting, we asked a server that was not our original server to get us our check. He did and then our server came with the check as well. We paid and left.
Over all, I would not go back to Chelly's and I would not recommend Chelly's. I don't write many reviews, I probably should because I do eat out quite often. But when I have food THIS bad and their Google rating is a 3.9 - I feel like I should write down my experience so other people don't make the...
Read moreMaybe they serve different food for ppl who order to go? Worst "mexican"resturant EVER! Seriously...Taco Bell is better! There is nothing authentic about this place except the chips and the decorations. Everything else is a cheap knock off. ALL the walls are terribly dirty...so is the bathroom. I was weary of eating here with viruses being spread so much these days...and my mom always said you can judge someone by the state of their bathroom and kitchen...but by that logic..this place should be shut down. Just walk in and look at ALL their walls. The dirt is caked on and look like they've never been cleaned. We asked if our order was right...the lady said..lets check. Shoulda been checked prior to bringing to the customer. My man is lactose intollerant and said no cheese or sour cream..they didn't put it outside..but added cheese inside his buritto. The burritos were soggy with grease and had no flavor.. Did they even use seasoning? Did the buy the tortillas from sunfresh? This was legit the worst place to eat mexican food in kcmo. Dont go unless you want a disease or unless you have no taste buds or like wasting money. This would be a great place to order food for someone you dont like. Dirty..no flavor..drenched in oil...How are you guys still open?? Gordan Ramsy would revoke their hispanic cards in a heartbeat. But wanna charge 10 bucks for a lunch meal and didnt even provide a drink? Panchos is better...and they even took...
Read moreThis place customer service was really good. The food was good or should I say that the food was tasty? However I gave service three stars because the waiter didn’t understand nothing that I was saying and I just went with the flow and when the food came out it was Lukewarm it wasn’t hot but the food was tasty so I got a to go box and took it home and warmed it up and it was excellent. I really do wish that they had someone that actually waited the tables like the people that bring out the food because I am telling you he didn’t understand nothing that I was saying and we would have gotten more but because he didn’t understand we stopped at nachos that super nacho and soft tacos but it was tasty and I think it was the language barrier or should I put it like this we spent $45. 55 with tip…It could’ve very well been 100 if he understood what we were saying but thank you for the customer service coming in the restaurant, you all was awesome. Oh yeah, and our drinks was virgin and we didn’t ask for them to be virgin… but this will not stop me from trying this place again or at least get it to go… no drinks tho you pay the same virgin or not and you really paying for the liquor lol but the no drink drinks was tasty too… the food is very tasty coming in the door the customer service and those people that bring the food out is excellent.
