I lived in Baton Rouge for three years and miss it terribly. I've come to Mudbug numerous times but chose today to write a review based on the soft shelled crab special. The food came scorching hot---which is a plus. The soft shell crab was perfectly fried (it wasn't thick with batter but almost akin to a light tempura) and with subtle seasoning. Nothing screamed "cajun" to me on the menu, but the flavor profiles/textures work for Midwestern palates. The olive tapenade was a 10/10. I could eat the ramekin it came in and wish there was more. Its acidity added a perfect zing to the slaw---which largely is unflavored. When you eat here, you have the option to sub rice and I highly suggest it. Each time, the rice has been perfectly cooked. If you order bread, the "cajun" flavor completely disappears because it's too heavy.
Editing my review: I still am a regular here but am very disappointed and think, very sadly, I made my last visit last week. For the past half year, portions (rice, slaw, aioli, crabs) have been decreasing. Yet the polenta mound is getting bigger. I may have received a tablespoon of slaw the last ten visits. A table next to me even went up to the counter two visits ago and asked to have more on their plate. Once, the slaw was even forgotten. The aioli is an .85 cent uncharge for an extra. The extra I received was almost 1/2 full and I ordered an extra because the 1st was half-full. I understand restaurants have a 90% closure rate---coupled with the times we have now---I know things must be very, very difficult. But just like with the hospitality industry, my money has tightened too. I'm opting to seek VALUE and quality elsewhere...because I still believe value and quality can exist together. Such a shame because there is a deep lack of...
Read moreI've had the privilege of knowing about this gem ever since moving to live off vivion road just 3 minutes away. I've spoken highly to most everyone I know that loves seafood/good food to come and pay Mudbug a visit ASAP.
Every time. Every SINGLE time I order food and take it home it's an impeccable experience. The flavors and textures of all the seafood dishes are quite literally to die for; I almost always take my food to go so I'm consistently missing on the eaten fresh experience but I digress, eating it 15-20 minutes later, if you ABSOLUTELY have to drive home to eat then it's just as worth the trip. ESPECIALLY if you get one of their full sides. Be it the red beans and rice, seafood gumbo, or that DAMN good Jambi, you'll be satisfied (I would most certainly HOPE YOU WOULD given portion sizes)*.
A single sandwich (regardless of what the order is) equals out to more than enough food for two, especially if another side dish is included. Prices of everything are increasing and we all are aware, I would HOPE people's expectations are within reason relative to events recently associated with the increase in food price, and it's not the organizations fault. I feel price on everything are fair for what we get, and I feel like I'm considered when a special is thought of.
This is a true to the book soul food/po' boy spot. Maybe I'm taking some excessive liberties by calling it soul food, but after every po' boy I eat from Mudbug; my own soul feels full.
It's really REALLY good food guys,...
Read moreI wanted to try this place as I’ve followed them for a few years. Finally got a job that required me to be in the area so I headed over…. Man what a roller coaster!!
When I first pulled up a saw the sign that said Mudbugs. But looking through the glass I saw racks of clothing ….. did they go out of business? Thrift store take its place? Argh… let’s go inside and find out . Nope , just the first 15 feet dedicated to clothing sales, completely unrelated to any of the food, no logo clothing or anything , just total randomness. Okkkkk….
Got ready to order and was told they were cooking rice and 10-15 minute wait…. During lunch time … man I got places to be , but I done drove this far , guess we will wait…
Ordered the Reuben poboy and a jambalaya…
The sandwich arrived and it was an odd mix of great flavor and absolutely soggy bread. Had to completely deconstruct to eat it. Bread was just a mushy mess… but the meat and slaw were solid and flavorful… moving onward….
The jambalaya - negative 10 …. Absolutely tasted like stale fish , not a clean seafood flavor as I’ve had many other places.
It was Inedible… waste of my money…
All in all, just a 4/10 experience. I wanted to like this place so much after all I’ve seen them post on FB and wanted so much to have a reason to return. But it’s...
