We visited this black owned establishment on Saturday, August 7, 2022. Upon arrival, the establishment was clean, lively, and a bit spacious. We were warmly greeted by the hostess who informed us it would be about a 45 minute wait. I would advise anyone to make a reservation in advance by calling. There’s no way to make a reservation online as far as I know. To avoid the 45 minute wait, we decided to take a small table towards the side and by the window for two. We were seated immediately due to us taking this table. Our waitress was Sydney who was extremely warm, sweet, and professional. She was also very attentive throughout our dining experience. Upon being seated, we were given paper menus which had the menu of the day, the regular menu, the drink menu, and the dessert menu. We ordered the following items: spinach artichoke dip, a cup of shrimp and corn bisque soup, half portion of herb crusted grouper, creamed spinach, wasabi mashed potatoes, half portion of parmesan crusted chicken, sweet mashed potatoes, blue envy cocktail, and toasted strawberry poundcake. I initially did change my drink from the peach Bellini to the blue envy, which Sydney arranged for me with no issue. The drinks came out a bit after we sat down and the blue envy was refreshing, sweet, and had an authentic tropical flavor. The server who brought over the drink also left the drink mixer on the table. I was able to have a bit more to my liking. The spinach dip came out right before the drink did and it was pretty tasty. I felt it could’ve been a bit warmer temperature wise, but it was a nice mix of spinach and artichoke. It was blended well and complementary with the toasted pieces of bread. Also it was seasoned well and hearty. About 20 minutes after our drinks, we received our main entrées. The grouper was seasoned very well and the capers on top were a great complement. This was along with the very seasoned and delicious creamed spinach. These two items were very savory, hot temperature wise, and had a nice authentic flavor. I could definitely taste the wasabi in the mashed potatoes, but it was not spicy. This was the perfect entrée combination and I see why it is so popular at this restaurant. That was some of the best creamed spinach I’ve had and it was a great consistency. My boyfriend enjoyed his parmesan crusted chicken. He also stated this was his first time ever trying the sweet mashed potatoes, which was a great treat for him. He also enjoyed the creamed spinach, which he said paired perfectly with his chicken. He stated the entrée was seasoned very well and didn’t need any additions. I did use the restroom while I was here which was clean and appropriate. This restaurant was quite busy since it was a Saturday evening. I can tell many people enjoy coming here patronizing this black owned business. I did like some of the decor in the restaurant which appeared to have a slightly swanky vibe. I can also tell this restaurant has been here for quite a while. It looks like some of the furnishings need to be upgraded and replaced. About 20 minutes after our entrées, we received our poundcake and to go order of the shrimp corn bisque soup. The poundcake was simply delicious! The French toast was perfection. It included vanilla ice cream in between and handmade whipped cream on top. The presentation was so cute. It appeared to be a Georgia peach on top of the entire dessert. This was one of the better desserts that I’ve had. Their take on poundcake was extremely unique by using French toast. I ate the shrimp corn bisque soup the next day and it was simply delicious. It had whole pieces of shrimp, corn, and a creaminess to the soup which was extremely flavorful. This is some of the better shrimp corn bisque soup that I’ve had. I could’ve easily purchased a bowl instead of a cup of this. I would highly recommend this black owned establishment to everyone in Atlanta. They also have a sister restaurant called Fish Thyme in Acworth, which I also recommend. I have also written a detailed review about Fish Thyme on...
Read moreWe had a birthday luncheon yesterday at this establishment for my son, who attends Kennesaw State University. This was our first time and according to the reviews, the food was exceptional.
Our party consisted of my wife & I, my two sons, & a couple of my son's friends. As far as the food, reviews were pretty much split down the middle. Three of us found the food to be just okay & three of us only ate it because we were paying for it.
One of the issues I have with this establishment is the fact that they charged me $10 just for bringing in a cake & balloons to celebrate my son's birthday. There was no celebratory Happy Birthday greeting by the staff, which isn't required but is typical at most places. It certainly would have been nice for them to acknowledge his birthday. Many of the other diners stopped by & to wish him happy birthday & we appreciated them for taking the time to do so.
The $10 charge might very well be a policy of theirs & that's fine. They however, had the opportunity to disclose the additional charge when we called several days prior to make reservations & asked if it would be okay to bring a cake in. They chose not provide us with the information regarding the additional cost & we would have certainly appreciated their doing so.
Another issue that I have is the fact that they take it upon themselves to automatically add in the gratuity & then ask if you wish to pay an additional tip. Our server was professional & accommodating but not to the tune of a $32 tip. Add the additional $10 for the cake and we're talking an additional $42 added to my bill for an experience that was far from great. Throw in the rather large piece of cake that we gave our server & the price continues to escalate.
Overall, I kind of felt cheated (maybe uneasy is a better term) after leaving Caper's Restaurant. I'm not saying that they actually did but I wasn't comfortable with the experience. Everything that took place might be business as usual for them & if so, that might be okay for some but it was a first for us. I do think they should be upfront & disclose their method of doing business and allow those that patronize their establishment to have options.
We could have chosen anywhere in Kennesaw to have my son's birthday celebration but we chose to do so here. I realize life isn't always perfect & not everything is in concrete but life is about how people feel & their perception of a specific interaction.
When visiting Kennesaw, we normally take my son & his friends out for a meal but due to this experience, it is very unlikely that we will choose this establishment again for any of our...
Read moreDined with friends to celebrate birthdays last night. Really enjoyed the welcoming atmosphere, and there was live music on the other side of the restaurant that we enjoyed. Our server was understandably busy, personable & engaging. Our appetizers made it to the table before our drinks did. Again, busy & we understood. Appetizers were the mushrooms and bruschetta, both delicious! For entrees, a friend had the Hawaiian ribeye and it was delicious and cooked well. Other had the burger and enjoyed it very much. I ordered the evening’s special, strip steak. Unfortunately I could not eat.The steak had too much gristle! Bite after bite was full of fat, and I emptied into my napkin. At no point did our server get back to the table to ask us how our meals were. I understand busy Friday nights having worked in service for many years. However, it’s always good to swing back to your guests after their meal has arrived just to see if there’s anything that they might need or how they’re enjoying their dishes. The next time we see her, she is bringing TOGO BOXES! When she returned, I politely let her know that I did not enjoy the steak at all. I had taken five bites, and four of them I spit out into the napkin. I apologized to let her know that the napkin was full of fat. She did not offer me something else in place of the steak that I did not eat, nor did a manager pop over to inquire what the issue was for me with the meal. We order two desserts and then receive our checks. I absolutely was charged for that steak. $31 for FIVE BITES OF GRISTLE! Again, it’s not as though I even ate a third of this steak. The fact that there was no acknowledgment is off-putting. It told me that as a customer they do not value my time and money. I paid for the steak, but based on this experience, I will not be going back. I’ve heard, this is the sister restaurant to Fish Thyme? I have NEVER had such an experience at that restaurant. I also have never sent anything back, but a friend did once. She ordered a pork chop, and although it was cooked well, she did not like the thickness of the chop preferring thinner cuts of pork. They promptly offered a replacement meal. She declined as we had drinks/apps & would be ordering dessert. Her meal was comped. To top it off, we were celebrating two birthdays. We came in with our gift bags. I was also surprised that at least one of the desserts wasn’t gifted. Chintzy way to do business. I am blown away by last night’s experience at Caper’s and not in a good way. I regret not having taken a picture of that...
