I got SICK from the food that I purchased (Flounder, Shrimp and Scallops Combo - $15.95, Whitings platter - $9.99 and Clam chowder soup - $4.99 = $32.99) on Saturday May 16, 2020. It was my first time trying this restaurant and I was excited after hearing that they serve fresh fish. However, that's not true, they served frozen fish, at least on this day they did. When I called Keyport Fishery the man (I assume to be the owner) that answered the phone was rude when I told him I got SICK from eating the food. I asked for a refund and told him I would bring the food back so he could see it. He indicated that he had sold over 1,200 meals that day and no one else had complained, but me, in years. After some brief conversation he stated that he had been in business for 20 years, never gives refunds and then rudely hung up the phone. I purchased my meals near closing around 6:55pm. I called after feeling sick because I couldn't eat much of the food. Unfortunately, the store didn't have an answering machine for me to leave a message but I wanted to let them know right away how I was feeling. I called the next day Sunday May 17, 2020 before they opened at 10:30am. He would not have had time to hear if anyone else had a complaint. This was a horrible experience for me; I have never had a business owner be so callous. CASH ONLY should have been a big red flag. Businesses that do CASH ONLY probably have had customers contact their credit card companies when they sell something that isn't right. Therefore, they stop taking credit cards but continue to mislead or sell things like frozen fish when they claim it's fresh. Maybe they sold fresh fish in the past but since the shutdown they may have decided to use frozen without notifying the customers, feeling that the customers wouldn't know what they were getting until they got home anyway. Besides he said "I never give refunds". They can give the customers anything through the door like frozen fish or cut the scallops in half. I don't know if this was their practice before the shut down or not but for $15.95 I think they can give their customers a whole scallop. This experience will teach me not to buy food from places during a PANDEMIC that slide the food to customers through an opening just wide enough to...
Read moreAfter reading an article in NJ magazine raving about this place, on a nice day, I decided to take a drive down. The online menu shows a sandwich on a roll. I ordered a fried clam sandwich. Imagine my surprise when I opened my bag and discovered it was on thin whitebread. Fried clams do not go on whitebread! I knew they haven't seating and took my food to the walkway along the water just a few blocks away. Parking was ample and I was able to park a short walk to a bench. I saw others doing the same. Upon opening the bag and spreading the food in my lap, I not only discovered it was on white bread, but there was no plastic fork or knife, no napkins and no ketchup. There was tarter sauce, but how do you spread it without a knife? There was coleslaw, but how do you eat it without a fork? Perhaps there was a counter there that I missed to take your own condiments, but if you are only a takeout, why are these things not in the bag already? They do not put lettuce or tomato on the sandwich. The fried clams were good, but even with the tarter sauce that I spread as best I could, without lettuce or tomato the sandwich was dry. The fries were good and crisp, but without ketchup, they were dry. I could hardly...
Read moreKeyport Fishery in New Jersey offers a refreshingly honest seafood experience. It’s a no-frills, takeout-only spot that lets the food speak for itself—and it speaks volumes. Located by the bay, this long-standing local favorite is all about freshness and simplicity. The fish is caught locally and cooked to order, which you can taste in every bite.
I ordered the haddock fish sandwich, and it was excellent. Served on simple white bread with a side of tartar sauce, it struck a perfect balance. The fish was lightly breaded, golden, and crisp on the outside, moist and flaky inside. The tartar sauce was a great complement—creamy, tangy, and clearly made to enhance rather than overpower. The sandwich was served with fries and coleslaw on the side too.
There’s no seating, just the seafood market and take-out counter. They have a strong reputation built on consistency. Service was quick and friendly, even with a steady flow of customers. You can tell they take pride in what they do.
Keyport Fishery is the kind of place that doesn’t try to be anything it’s not—and that’s exactly what makes it worth visiting. If you’re after fresh, well-prepared fried seafood served simply and done right, this spot...
