J. Edwards Fine Chocolates & Gourmet Cakes — Restaurant in Kokomo

EDIT - 2/11/24 - As you can see the owner responded back, which none of what’s in their response was true. The lady on the phone WAS condescending and rude. They for 100% fact did NOT say anything to my wife about putting the cake in the refrigerator either, so that’s lie number two. Upon reading the negative reviews on here, it seems that this place has a long history of being rude and unprofessional to their customers. They also have reviews blocked on their Facebook page, and when I went to leave a review they blocked me. Disgraceful and dishonest business practice!! BEWARE!!

Just yesterday my wife ordered a cake for my birthday. She has been a long standing customer and has ordered many cakes from here. She picked the cake up and came home with it and checked everything out and it looked good. About 1 hour later, we opened it up to serve to guests. The picture attached to this review is what the cake looked like upon opening up. It appeared to have melted. The cake itself was delicious though, but my wife was very upset that it looked this way when it was time to serve to our guests.

She proceeded to email J Edwards and describe what happened and show them the picture. J Edwards reached back out and said that from the picture, the cake melted. They proceeded to tell her she was supposed to refrigerate the cake prior to serving, and that the cake melted because it was hot out yesterday. It was only in the mid 50s low 60s yesterday. She was not told this from anyone, nor were there signs on the box stating this. The woman on the phone from J Edwards rudely said “I’m sorry but there are signs all over the store stating this, and the best we can do is offer you 4 cupcakes.” This is terrible customer service. Not only were you rude to my wife on the phone, but you also didn’t attempt to make the situation right and tried to blame her for the cake melting, and didn’t offer a reasonable solution to take care of a long paying customer. Terrible!! We will go somewhere else...

I am a regular at J Edwards. The customer setvice is always friendly. Over the past several years they have been my go-to spot for birthdays and other celebrations. I do have a few criticisms but before I get to any of them, I want to say that overal they make beautiful and tasty treats that are delicious and satisfying. Also, we have never had a cross-contamination reaction when ordering gluten-free items for my son who has celiac. So my complaints notwithstanding J Edwards is a fantastic local establishment and I encourage you to give them your business.

So, let me explain why I did not give them a full five stars. They are high for the Kokomo market. At times I wish they offered less ornate treat choices at a more modest price point, especially for someone like me who can not order from just any bakery. Additionally, their regular buttercream is WAY too sweet. For my money aim for a white chocolate/chocolate/creamcheese frostings as they are much more ballanced. Sometimes, the large cupcakes and cake by the slice and once even a whole bannana split cake had a rather dry crumb...they might want to think about moistening these cakes with jam or syrup.

We have ordered several things in the past & have been very pleased unfortunately that was not the case today. I went in to pick up a 6 inch plain cheesecake, the girl that helped me was polite and courteous it appeared she couldn't locate our order & shortly her and a man came from the back with a 6 inch strawberry cake at that time the man said this is what was ordered that he had spoke with the woman himself I was sitting across from my Mother when she spoke to him & heard everything she had said and told him this when he said I don't have any reason to lie about it I then replied I don't think your lying about it I think you misunderstood he obviously became angry at this point and said that I must have misunderstood. In my opinion this is a very poor way to give treat a customer. We have always gotten great customer service and delicious products from Edwards up until today but this was for a small 60'th birthday celebration that had to be delayed because the cheesecake we ordered wasn't available. To be honest I will miss not having Edward's products for our special occasions but the attitude of this one employee has changed my feelings about this establishment therefore I won't continue to patronize...
