During our recent visit to L.A., my wife and I along with a bunch of friends dined in at Yedang in O.C. for some Korean food. I typically try to avoid places with too many items on the menu but boy, were we in for a surprise.
First, gyejang (fermented raw crab) was fantastic. I don't normally eat this at all but it was so damn good that it turned me into a gyejang believer. I need to find some places back home in Toronto.
Bossam (Boiled pork belly) was a top-notch dish as well. Tender, good balance of meat & fat, and the fresh kimchi & side veggies were excellent combo with the dip (ssam jang)
Both types of Naeng Myun (Cold noodles) were great as well. If they make good broth for this, the place will typically make great Galbi Tang (Beef rib soup) as it was true for Yedang.
Stews (Kimchi and soft tofu Chigye) were great. I really hate watery Chigyes / stew but they were thick and rich. It's definitely as rice killer.
I always say if a Korean restaurant can't get Bibimbap or Bulgogi right, never go there and it was no exception here.
The sides (Ban Chan) were plentiful and each of them was super tasty.
I'm quite surprised at the number of low ratings here. Most of them seem to be related to service but based on our experience, it was beyond excellent. Servers were attentive, much more so than at typical Korean restaurants despite how busy it was.
We will definitely come back here when we are back in L.A. / SO Cal area. Highly...
Read moreYEDANG is a bustling restaurant packed with Koreans (weekends there is usually a wait). It’s a lot of Korean comfort food, but their best dishes are BRAISED.
Must-try dishes include EUNDAEGU JORIM, a spicy braised black cod that's rich in flavour. There's also AGU JJIM, featuring monkfish braised with spicy sauce and bean sprouts. The fish is tender, and the sauce adds a delightful kick. These two perfect fish dishes are so good that even our toddler was eating it up.
Not a fan of fish? The #2 YEDANG SPECIAL: MUKEUNJI DWAEJI GALBI JJIM is a hearty alternative. The MUKEUNJI, or aged kimchi, delivers a robust sour flavour, enhanced by a hint of chipotle smokiness. It's a delightful twist not often found in Korea.
One dish that didn't live up to expectations was the YEDAG BOSSAM, which ended up being underwhelming and dry. However, the overall culinary experience at YEDANG is exceptional while combing traditional Korean flavors with more local ingredients...
Read moreFirst, I will list the summary here: great food, great atmosphere of friendly Korean people, and the portion sizes are LARGER THAN THEY APPEAR although they are fairly priced at around 20$ for every person. Otherwise attached bellow is the actual menu and the deal I took was of the lunch special combo of 23.99.
The food I ate were Galbi, Kimchi Stew and Bibimbop. To describe the flavors and textures that were involved in these three dishes would probably take up a short essay of descriptions that we all don't have time to read much more for me to break down. So in short, it was very well balanced and delicious with some spice of the Gochujang mixed with white rice.
I would highly recommend coming here to experience authentic and traditional Korean food and if the owners see this, I give my props and respect to the cooks and hope you continue the hard work that...
