Firstly, the food is always good here! We were in a couple nights for my daughter’s 18th birthday and the food was the ONLY thing that wasn’t disappointing. I’ve been to Konichiwa several times - Jubilee & Ben always give great service and they are why I’ve returned. That was not my experience on Wednesday evening! Started out fine, we were greeted & our orders were taken. (We did mention to the server that it was my daughter’s 18th birthday.) Food came out at different times, which wasn’t a problem. However once all the food came out, we only saw our server one more time. I ordered avocado tempura from the assistant sever around 6:45 and when it still hadn’t come 20 minutes later, I got our server’s attention and asked about it. She didn’t seem to know anything about it so I guess it was ordered then. Nothing was communicated to us if there was an issue or the kitchen was behind. They weren’t busy; there were no other tables inside for the first half of our visit. Another 15 minutes passed and I asked the server if they were coming, “they’re taking their sweet time” she said, referring to the kitchen. When yet another 10 minutes passed, I got up from the table and went to find our server to cancel the order. She didn’t come out; I told the bus girl/server assistant. We still didn’t see our server at that point and when she finally came over, I handed her some of our empty plates and my daughter ordered dessert. The desserts were not delivered by our server and there was no candle or even a “Happy Birthday”. (I wasn’t expecting anything free, but a candle would’ve been nice.) They finished dessert and no one had come over to drop the check or see if we needed anything else. (Now that I think about it, our water was never refilled at any point.) They were closing and had put all the chairs up. I didn’t mind the chairs but we were being ignored and shouldn’t have had to ask for our $200+ check. We waited longer and finally had to get up for someone to bring us our check (not our server). We paid (and tipped) and never saw her again. By the time we left, I felt so unwelcome and like WE were an inconvenience. Extremely disappointing service!! I am not the type to leave a review without first giving the manager a chance to fix it but we literally never saw our server again. I’m a bartender and so grateful when guests spend money, especially in this economy. My daughter picked Konichiwa weeks ago for her milestone birthday and I will never...
Read moreI usually don’t leave negative reviews but due to the lack of follow up and resolution to the issue, customers should know. We have been coming to this place since we moved to SD 3 years ago. We love Friday’s during the farmers market to people watch. The service and food has always been awesome. Large portions, tasty and good prices. However, I did a take out order a couple weeks ago for a beach picnic with my husband.
I surprised when I was told the total which about 30-35% increase and this was not reflected in their online menu, which by the way still has not been updated. I proceeded with the order anyway because we love the food here. I paid extra $2 for spicy yellowtail on the Volcano roll instead of crab because of allergies. Picked up the order, did not check it because I have never had an issues. Driver 25 mins to the beach to realize the order still had crab not the spicy yellowtail which we paid extra for and the scallop roll also had the crab salad on it. We could not eat either roll I called to speak with the manager. She stated that he would remake it. However we were already out of the area. I was given the owners information. I called them on the next business day. It’s been over 2 weeks and no response and no resolution. I have called spoke with manager Shane who’s been very courteous. However no resolution. Just good money wasted without getting the product I purchased. This is absolutely unreasonable and not the way loyal customers or any customer paying good money...
Read moreI feel compelled to preface some of my reviews with my history. I was raised in sushi bars, stashed in the corner at 2 weeks, news paper on the floor below me once I was old enough for solids. I've had the best, I've had the worst. This place is as average as it gets.
Ordered a salmon skin handroll, spicy tuna roll, and a miso. Slightly above average wait for slightly smaller than average portions on the miso and the spicy tuna. Hand roll was on point. I guess that's what is to be expected on la mesa's main stretch.
Ordered a tempura to fill me up, came out much faster, bonus points for tempura green onion, but points lost for no tempura broccoli. Tempurad broccoli is basically the best form broccoli and tempura can take.
Would give this place 2.5 stars if I could for being so average, but I'm left with the choice of roudning up or down and I made my choice.
Miso, spicy tuna, hand roll, tempura, no drinks $31. Defintly going to my normal spot even if its a bit farther at that price. Offer a deal on 2 spicy tuna rolls and we'll talk. Until then, won't be coming back to this place on my own, but I wouldn't say anything negative if my friend wanted to come here and I would have a good time. Probably the best...
