This was my first time eating at La Cuisine de Mamon...the restaurant at historic Vermillion ville and I was VERY DISAPPOINTED! I had heard a lot about the restaurant and it's chef and I wanted to give it a try and see for myself. I came around 1 pm for lunch, and the restaurant was empty with the exception of one of the vermilionville employees. It was a Wednesday, and I opted to have the plate lunch special of the day, which was roasted turkey. The lunch came with a choice of either a salad or gumbo cup, the main entre was accompanied by mashed potatoes and a mixed vegetable melody, and a dessert of bread pudding was included in the $13.95 Lunch price. I had the gumbo cup and was very surprised at the taste. It was very good and had a lot of chicken and sausage pieces in the cup. This made me look forward to my plate lunch to come...but alas, I was let down by what was presented to me. The plate was very unappetizing in its presentation, it looked like the food had been thoughtlessly thrown on...very messy quite ugly to behold. As for the taste of the food...it left much to be desired. The roast turkey was 2 chunks of pre formed turkey, and the sides of mashed potatoes and mixed vegetables were to put it nicely very disgusting in both taste and appearance. Definitely not like the food Mama used to make and Serve at home. The meal had a very dry bisquet on the side....too dry to be eaten, unless cardboard is your preferred taste. The whole meal reminded me of the bad cafeteria food I was served in High School. The one saving grace of the whole meal was the piece of bread pudding that was served at the end of the meal. It was warm and had a good tasting sauce to go with it, which helped to drown out the taste of the awful plate lunch that came before it. I do have to compliment the service, as both the hostess and waitress were very kind and welcoming. Maybe I made it to lunch on a bad day? I am told that there weekend buffets are very tasty, so I may try and make it back on a weekend to give the restaurant another try, but as for my lunch experience today, on a scale of 1 to 10...I would give it a...
Read moreWe recently visited Vermilionville Restaurant | La Cuisine de Maman on our way home to Texas, hoping for an authentic Cajun-Creole experience after we had an amazing meal the day before in Baton Rouge. Unfortunately, our visit was disappointing. We waited an hour for our food, and to make matters worse, we saw other guests who arrived after us eating and finishing their meals before we were even served. When we asked about the delay, the waitress mentioned that we "caught them by surprise" with our jambalaya order, even though it was on the menu. She said they were more prepared for other orders, which didn’t make sense, especially since the restaurant claims to offer a homey, welcoming experience.
What was more frustrating was that there was no communication about the delay until we asked. It would have been appreciated if they had at least offered to refill our drinks or just something to make up for the wait.
As for the food, my husband ordered the jambalaya, and I had the half-and-half fried catfish and shrimp, with crawfish étouffée. While the food was decent, it didn’t live up to the level of excitement we were hoping for after our Baton Rouge meal. Overall, the service felt unprofessional, and the lack of communication really impacted our experience. We were hoping for a warm, welcoming vibe, but unfortunately, we didn’t feel that. Wouldn’t be rushing back...
Read moreI visited Vermillionville and this restaurant while in Lafayette for Festival International. I can't wait to return to this charming restaurant! That's saying a lot because Lafayette is filled with excellent food! I ordered the plate lunch which started with a cup of excellent gumbo. It had a beautiful dark roux and was full of wonderful flavor. That set the standard for the rest of the meal. My lunch plate was filled to the brim with all manner of deliciousness. There was crawfish etouffee over rice, smothered green beans that tasted like they came from my mama's kitchen, fried shrimp with tartar sauce, and a huge biscuit. I was too full to have dessert, although I regret not trying the bread pudding. Next time...My server was very friendly and efficient, and the setting charming. It was an excellent value. I will...
