Service is absolutely horrible and has not changed in many years. I simply cannot believe this restaurant is still running. When we went in 2018, the waitress (Asian, short black hair (bob cut), thick framed glasses) gave us the wrong dish. When we told her, she spoke to us in a very condescending tone and insisted that it was the right order. We were pretty sure it was wrong, so she essentially gaslighted us and we were left eating a dish we did not want. Recently, we decided to eat there again because we were in the area with other friends. Towards the end of our meal, the same waitress noticed that we were low on rice, and asked us if we wanted more. We said yes and she came back with one small box (~1 cup) of rice to take home. When the receipt came, we saw a charge of $6 for rice. I complained to her at the counter since I thought the rice was free and came with the meal. She said that the $6 was for the extra rice we asked for. I was furious, because 1) she OFFERED the rice to us and 2) she charged $6 for a TINY box of rice. There was a lot of back and forth. I said that if there was a charge, she should have told us when she offered to give us more rice, and that every other Chinese restaurant I go to serves rice for free. She kept speaking very rudely and said that “we always charge for extra rice”. I then told her I wanted to return the unopened box of rice and she said no. I was pretty much done with her and went back to my table. A few minutes later, she came to me and said “it’s my bosses fault, I had to charge you for the rice since he saw me take it. Otherwise, I would have given it to you for free”. I just reiterated again that she should have told us that the extra rice she offered would have been $6. We were a big group of 6 and spent more than $100. sure she lied about her boss because she is the restaurant’s owner. I’ve read the other negative reviews and I can’t believe this woman continues to behave this way after...
Read moreTheir website says they are open for indoor dining so I arrived with the intention of once agai dining in their room. However the sign on the door says "Takeout Only". I went inside to order and mentioned the discrepancy with the website. Was told by the young lady something to the effect that it was the web service company's problem, not hers.
The lunch menu had always came with a choice of white or fried rice and, until COVID, two kinds of soup. No more soup but I never complained about no reduction in prices, rather I made it a point to tip in the neighborhood of forty percent to support them. Today I mistakenly ordered brown rice and returned to correct it to fried rice. The young lady scolded me and told me this time ok but no more fried rice...only white unless i paid $3.50 extra.
My order was ready and I was shocked to learn that they had more than doubled the price! I know that everything has gone up in price during the pandemic, even my other favorite restaurants have had price increases due to forecasting demand and supply chain issues but none have doubled their prices.
I must manage my own expenditures and make cuts where necessary, this business should do the same. Perhaps if their lunchtime costs are out of balance with the number of customers they should do what a few other restaurants have done and end lunch service instead of trying to maintain the same business model.
I've enjoyed the food here since moving nearby in 1996 so have been taken aback by my most recent experiences. This is not the first time I've felt treated more as an inconvenience than a valued long time customer.
Sadly this will most likely be the final time I order from...
Read moreReally good Szechuan food! I ordered my first order from this place today as a test, so I ordered General Tzo, pork wontons in chili sauce, and meat potstickers. I had a choice of mild or very spicy. I ordered very spicy on all, it's Szechuan! The menu was amazing, huge variety. The food was delivered but Uber Eats. It was all very hot and fresh.
If this isn't a single owner restaurant, I would be amazed, because this food was absolutely delightful! First, it's the only Szechuan restaurant in or around PDX that's actually SERVING Szechuan food! Nothing tasted anything like "production" food.
The Tzo's was incredible, chunks of chicken thigh, perfectly battered, not that super thick stuff, just right. The chicken was tender and delicious, cooked correctly so it falls apart, not the stuff I get at other places that's tough. Its cooked through with no hard overcooked spots. If you order Tzo's at other places you probably know exactly what I'm talking about. The sauce was VERY good, I'd bet made from scratch, if not it's very very good. Spicy, dark and thick, correctly sweet and a nice spicy bite to it. Very flavorful and hands down the best Tzo's in PDX.
The potstickers appear to be handmade, the meat filling was delicious, the potstickers are large, plump, and perfectly cooked. Delicious.
The Pork wontons in chili sauce was brilliant. A big portion of ~12 pork wontons in a sweet and spicy chili sauce that, again, tastes like it's made from scratch. Wontons were cooked to perfection, the pork filling savory and delicious.
The whole meal was incredible, far better than I expected, and I'm very happy to have found Szechuan Kitchen and will definitely...
