As a continuation with eats from “Made in Chicago: Stories Behind 30 Great Hometown Bites”, my next stop was Fat Johnnies but NOT for The Mother In Law (as stated in the book) but rather the Mighty Dog. This is essentially the MIL but add a hotdog and cheese (to the tamale & chili on a bun dragged through the garden).

This will be a preference to corn rolled tamales. Personally, the tamale gave it a gritter and drier taste in my mouth which is a carb redundacy with the bun. However, the red hot had snap and was super tasty and salty. Overall, I would prefer the standard Chicago dog (sans the cucumber).

Nonetheless, the quality of food is high while prices are suprisingly low. This small shack is only take-out and CASH ONLY. I believe the owner works the line and was very friendly. I will try their regular dog...

I mean, what can I say about fat johnny's . It's the most iconic, best tasting hot Dog in the city of chicago!!!!! So therefore, it's the best hot dog in the world!!!! That nostalgic charm from the first time that I went to this stand in 1976 it's still there. You can close your eyes while biting into this hot dog and i'm transported back to 1976❤️❤️❤️ the ingredients on this hot dog taste like they were just picked in the garden, cleaned, and put on your hot dog!!! Also today, I got something that I've never tried before. I got a father in law!! Which is a tamale in a poppy seed, hot dog bun, with all the trimmings and chili and cheese!!! Yes it's as amazing as it sounds!!! Prices are fantastic. Also you just...

Fantastic! We ordered the chili dog with the works and every bite was bursting with complementing flavors. The peppers on top add a unique component that sets it apart from any other chili dog that we tried during our stay in Chicago. Special call out to the seasoned cucumber--I could eat a plate of those all on their own.

Not only was the chili dog delicious, but Fat Johnnie was so kind and welcoming. I told him I was visiting and heard he was the best and asked what I should order. He said, "Get her the chili dog with the works!"

Fat Johnnie's was such an awesome experience that we will be making another stop before we leave to go back home. And for a short four day visit,...

Absolutely delicious, a true Chicago hotspot. I absolutely love the original classic look of a hot dog stand. I highly recommend stopping here and getting a red hot. Best hot dog. The staff was extremely friendly. They did have several umbrella covered picnic tables to sit at which was really nice..we drove a little over 20 miles to get here. Street parking is available obviously first come first serve just watch out for signs posted on when there is absolutely no parking. I was there today and sign posted no parking Wednesday from 9-2 probably when they street sweep. But this place is an absolute gem. I will definitely be back more.

*cash only* Phenomenal dog. I’m on the hunt to find my favorite Chicago dog, and while we’re only about 5 restaurants deep into our list so far, this is at the top of my list so far. The location itself is small, with minimal parking options, but worth the effort. The staff were nice and quick with the order. This is a garden dog, cucumber instead of pickle. Everything was fresh, the dog had great flavor and snap. Everything was balanced. If you want sport peppers, you just have to ask. My only deduction, really, is no fries option. I can completely understand why they wouldn’t have a fryer in that tiny stall, but still.
