We discovered Garifuna Flava at the Lakeview "Taco" Festival in the Summer of 2014. They were serving up jerk chicken tacos. These tacos were seasoned to perfection, and provided an explosion of Caribbean flavors dancing on my tongue. The jerk chicken tacos had a mild-spicy kick, but my tongue was not on fire. Tender, juicy and outstanding, so we decided to hit up this restaurant for lunch one Saturday afternoon. Lunch prices are reasonable. For starters, we ordered the Panades which were incredibly prodigious! We also ordered the Hudut Baruru w Falumou and the Conch Soup (filled with fresh seafood and served with a die of coconut rice and sweet plantains), which were super delicious and filling. Both are worthy of five-stars. The only reason I am giving a 4-star rating is because service was super slow. However, the service was hospitable, professional and courteous. Our server kept our water glasses filled. Service was not over-the-top attentive, but it was not horrible either. This is a non-pretentious restaurant. The food is made from scratch and everything is very fresh. If you have a sweet tooth you must try their "Milk Cake" for dessert. This dessert is definitely 10-star worthy! I recommend this place for solid, prodigious and stick-to-your ribs comfort cuisine. Read the reviews at Yelp. You will understand why this restaurant has received rave-reviews....
Read moreToo expensive! Small Wings (see pic) and portions!
We ordered takeout. The total was 83.55. The order included 12 wings, oxtails with one side, one large rice and beans one large mac & cheese. This was to feed four people but it actually fed two. The chicken wings were extremely tiny.
We felt like the amount of money was not worth the food that we received. There was nothing spectacular about the food. We could’ve went to a dine in restaurant for the same amount and received service, water, bread, and drinks for the same amount versus a greasy takeout option as what this was.
Therefore place is not recommended.
The food cost is too high, the amount of food is not adequate and there are no bells and whistles.
There’s no reason why anyone would want to pay $83 for what we received .
We actually called the restaurant to let them know that we were displeased with the situation, hoping that they would be curious to improve. The individual on the other end of the phone became irate and hung up on us when we voiced our concerns. Needless to say, we will not be ordering from...
Read moreStill don’t understand why they can’t tell you how long they will take. First it will be 40 minutes. Then it will be an extra 30 minutes. Then it will be another 30 minutes, before continuing to sit even longer still. How are they so unorganized? The way society works in a large metropolis like Chicago, that’s not good for patrons who work, run businesses, or have families. I just don’t get it. The only thing that makes sense as a possible reason for this is that they can’t handle the bandwidth of orders, and instead of rejecting new orders at capacity, they just allow those customers to wait indefinitely until they get frustrated enough to cancel. Weird way to manage orders, but I can’t think of anything else remotely reasonable for why they can’t seem to process orders in a fashion more fit for 2021 Chicago. I mean I know they aren’t unhooking fish and de-feathering chickens to order, but maybe they are....the food is great though so that would make some sense. One day I will experiment by trying to be the very first order to see if it will make a difference in...
