We were so excited to try Gary’s. I have always been a fan of Harry’s and was excited to learn that it had become fine dining with the new owner. Upon arrival we were greeted with the children’s coin machines in the vestibule, no big deal, but for fine dining it made me giggle a bit that they were still there. We were sat promptly and professionally. Our waitress I believe must have been a bit new, as I ordered an extra dry Grey Goose martini with 2 olives and she was a bit confused. She said they have a special dirty martini ($14 if I remember correctly) on the drink list that they could modify. I said that wasn’t necessary, just a simple vodka martini, shaken with 2 olives will be just fine. She looked befuddled and said she would try to see if that could be done. I was a bit surprised as the logo for Gary’s features a martini. When the bill came, I was charged for the specialty cocktail, but the martini was fine. Probably growing pains, as to he expected. My significant other and I both ordered the classic lobster. The website states that it is $39. However the menu and waitress advised us that it was $49. Again probably growing pains and it slipped somebody’s mind to update the website. I had told many people prior to our visit that we were excited to try the too good to be true $39 lobster at Gary’s. Turns out it was too good to be true, as we were charged $49. However, the lobster quality, taste and preparation does command $49 so I did not mind paying it. The lobster came with a potato that was cooked to perfection. My significant other got the broccoli and said it was fantastic. I had the asparagus, it was hard and undercooked but that is ok, everyone at Gary’s is still in the learning phase. The lobster was surprisingly served with corn on the cob. We were not expecting that and we were thrilled when it came with the dish. It is out of season and of course the quality reflected that, as it was small, difficult to get through and slightly burnt. But let’s be honest… who can find good corn on the cob in January. I had the old fashioned with dinner. Presentation was a 10/10. The flavor of the drink was just as perfect. It should also be noted that we had the cheese curds as an appetizer, some of the best we have ever tasted. All in all, after tip I paid $239. With time Gary’s will command that price, it’s not quite there yet, however you can tell they are well on the way. I told a buddy that if my experience was good, I would take him within the next week or two. I intend to and will update this review to include that experience as well. Give Gary’s a shot, and please be kind, as a new restaurant they need true and constructive feedback to be the best...
Read moreWe had our management holiday dinner there last night. The evening started out well. Our server seemed polite and attentive. We all got drinks and after some talking, we ordered meals. I ordered the filet for myself. Although I prefer medium steak, a lot of restaurants tend to cook towards lesser doneness, so I tend to order medium well as I'm fine eating a steak anywhere between medium and medium well. When our food came out, I started to cut into my steak only to see that it was well done, not even medium well. But the steak was tender and had a good flavor, so I tried to just eat it anyways.
When the server came around, I pointed out my well done steak to him, asking him to mention it to the kitchen. He offered to have it remade, but I didn't want to cause a fuss, so I declined. Now, as I mentioned, this was a group of people having their holiday dinner. In my party were 3 sous chefs, an executive chef, 2 caterers, and a grill cook manager. They ALL said my steak was well done and I should send it back, but I didn't want to look like a "Karen". I ate about 1/2 of my steak before deciding I had eaten enough. The server came around again and made a point to tell me that I was clearly mistaken, that my steak was made to my specifications. I was annoyed, but tried to let it go.
As we were wrapping up the evening, the server offered to box up my remaining steak. I didn't really want it, but told him to go ahead. He took my plate away and came back a few minutes later with a box. He then proceeds to tell me that he took a good look at my steak under better lighting and AGAIN tell me that my steak was in fact cooked to medium wellness. By this point, I actually wished I had sent the steak back to be remade, but what was done was done. I didn't appreciate the server's constant insistence that I (and 3 sous chefs, an executive chef, etc) were all wrong in our assessment of that stupid steak. If I ever eat here again, I will make sure not to sit in that...
