June 2023: This place came highly recommended by coworkers. There was a potluck at the office, and I wanted to bring something unique to the table. Since I didn't want to cook and I lost negotiations with my wife for her to cook (🤣😆) a traditional Vietnamese dish, buying pastries was the next best thing.
I bought a cherry cheese strudel and an apple strudel, both with sugar sprinkled on top. I tried their danishes as well and have to agree with other reviewers that their raspberry cheese Danish is simply amazing. Actually, any Danish with cheese and fruit will not disappoint!
PROS: Great pastries with great taste. The strudel are very good, but the danishes are amazing. The flaky texture of the pastry coupled with the warm, fresh fillings is simply the best around the CLE. All of the coworkers said that pastries were delicious. A powerful testament came from a friend with roots in Bosnia, "where did you get these? They taste like the pastries back home, and I could not find people who cook like this anywhere in Cleveland." Location is easy to find. The bakery is in the city of Lakewood on Madison Ave. Reasonable prices. I paid $2.50 for each danish and $15 for each full strudel. They do not sell halves.
CONS: I was taking photos for this review, and the lady (who I assume to be the owner) had a concerned look on her face. Perhaps she thought that I was an inspector. I explained to her what I was doing to quell any concerns. Not really a "Con," but a funny story to mention. Parking at this store front bakery is limited, but worth a short walk for the taste. All credit card transactions will be assessed a fee. This is not uncommon, but patrons should be aware.
SUMMARY: Great tasting pastries. In comparison to Lydia's (another Hungarian bakery in the greater Cleveland area), Tommy's has the best fruit and cheese danishes. Lydia's has the best strudels. Both are 5 ⭐️ bakeries that everyone...
Read moreI leave a good amount of reviews on here and I really try to say positive things as often as possible. I struggled with whether or not I was going to write a review about this experience. I ultimately decided to say something, because I think people deserve to know who they’re giving their money to, especially for a small business when there’s so many other small businesses out there. You can tell this place is struggling, but frankly, they deserve to be struggling. Pastries are wonderful cannot lie about that. The place is tiny and sort of dirty but it is a small business in an old building so I had been looking past that. It is going to suck never going again but the man that owns this place is just a nightmare. We come for pastries, not your weird political rants and racism. This isn’t the first time I have heard him say something off, but this time was outrageous. This is one of the great things about America! I can choose never to spend my money there again and I am going to tell everybody I know about the crazy stuff he was spewing so they can make their own informed decision. He also insulted me for what I was ordering which was really weird considering I was just ordering the pastries they had out and not asking for anything special? There’s plenty of other places to get pastries in Lakewood go...
Read moreDanishes are phenomenal! They’re huge and surprisingly inexpensive. Just the right amount of filling; there’s plenty in there but it’s not to the point that it all leaks out the other side when you bite into it. The walnut rolls are so good they’re addictive and if I could exclusively survive on those alone I totally would. The owner is incredibly nice and if you get a chance to talk to him you can tell he’s incredibly passionate about his pastries and his recipes are authentic and have been passed down through several generations in his family. Any time a friend or family member comes from out of town I make sure to give them the full Cleveland experience and have them try all the best food spots, and Tommy’s is definitely...
