A friend was visiting from out of town so before I took him to the airport--we needed to get a bite to eat. He suggested Nellies but they were closed so I thought we'd give this place a try. I had heard about it for years but never went myself. My friend used to go there a lot and talked about it quite often. The food was below average. The service made it worse. I'll never go back. I had to wave down the waitresses at least four times. To get more water, get more tortillas, lemons for the unfiltered water, for our check so we could leave the place quickly. Our waitress was on the phone a few tables down so I asked the other lady for some help---she didn't like that too much so we still had to wait for our waitress to help us. Too bad Nellie's was closed, service is usually bad there but I keep going back cuz the food makes up for it. The food did not make up for the bad service here. I understand there are people who go to Dick's Cafe often and enjoy it. I don't get it though. If you like waiting a long time for refills on water and coffee or don't mind that your food is getting cold while waiting to ask for another tortilla--this is your place. The place was not crowded either when we went. 3 other tables had customers and that was it. 18 bucks for two plates of food is not a place I'll ever return for the service received. Maybe if it was 10 or 11 dollars to make up for the shabby service. If you want service and food, go to a place that knows what they're doing when serving customers. Cha-chi's would probably be the better...

There are terrible places and then there's awful places. This is both. Floors were dirty and filthy. Dried food stains still on the floor. Flies inside. AC not that great. Rude waitresses. Food was average. My tacos were burnt. We were there Saturday 8/28/21. We arrived at 2pm. Ordered tacos and Mexican plate for party of 5. I asked for a beer at 245pm. The rude waitress said it was too late to order because they close at 3pm. It was no big deal but if she wanted to she could have given me one last one. But this lazy waitress takes it a step further and tries to redirect the blame from herself by saying it's illegal to sell a beer when they are closed. It was still 15 min before closing. She was more interested in pretending to clean the restaurant than serving the customers. She wasn't washing her hands after handling cleaning supplies or paper money. Luckily we had already been served. We asked for separate checks and she tried to overcharge me twice but I brought it to her attention each time. This was a horrendous eating experience. Definitely would never recommend this place. I'll never go back. PS.. the only good thing about this place was that my first beer was ice cold. If I was the owner I'd fire these...

The first time we went the food and service was great. Today was not the best service or food. Let's start from the beginning. We walk in and told to sit anywhere on the right side. The young lady never said hello. We find a table and sit down. She makes us move to another table because there was two of us. Later a group of three sit at the first table she made us move from and she never made them move. She comes to the table and absolutely rude. We order our food. I ask her for a cheeseburger and a extra order of fries. I made sure I told her no green chile. My husband orders the mushroom burger. We get our food. My cheeseburger is packed with green chile. She forgot to add the fries. I let her know I didnt order green chile. She takes it back. She never apologizes for her mistake. She come back and all the cook had scraped the chile off. I know this because there was still chile on my food. What if I had a food allergy they would made me really sick. I picked the chile off and still got heartburn. She never refilled our drinks or checked on us. Really disappointed in the...

Dick's Cafe has been a fixture in Las Cruces since my mom and dad were Aggies. My dad loves to tell the story about when he would go to Dick's in college, Dick would be there and greet everyone. He would allow students to take out a tab and pay it off monthly. Dick was still alive when I was a student but had given up on the tabs. Nonetheless, the green chile cheeseburgers were reliably awesome! We went back a few weeks ago, for the burger. Dick passed away a few years ago, but the cafe is in the same place and the burgers are still awesome. My granddaughter was delighted and we were able to share this special place with a fourth generation in our family.

Updated review: a year later and Dick’s still isn’t that good, in fact, it was a bit worse on my latest visit. Service was horrible, food so so at best and the place just had a tired feel to it. My combo plate was just so-so and it didn't have the same cool vibe as it used to. I'll still go there for my green chile cheeseburger, but for Mexican food, there are a lot of other places nearby that are better.

One server for a busy restaurant in the morning is a little challenging. But I enjoyed the food. Sometimes they have a crowd and sometimes they don't so it's hard to schedule I'm sure. I had biscuits and gravy, I requested ground beef put in my gravy and the accommodated. Periodically I'll have a side order of sweet potato fries to share with whoever I'm with at this table
