Calico Jack's Saloon — Restaurant in Las Vegas

It's really hard to give this place a really fair rating because of a lot of factors. I have to give this place a high rating because my girlfriend really likes this place. However, because of the comparison to other places that are more "popping", I have to kill the rating just a little bit. In my travels, I've discovered that many of the pubs and taverns around here are very similar. The dining area is separate from the lounge and the dining part usually doesn't have a greeter or a podium for a greeter to stand at to give you the idea that you should wait somewhere until you are seated. Because I'm from the West Coast, I'm kind of used to a different vibe when I go out to taverns and pubs (however, most of the taverns and pubs on the west coast close at about 2 am). I'm unclear if there's an area for local live entertainment in the lounge (in any of these taverns). The lighting is very dark and moody. It's almost depressing. I want to say that it's almost like when you go home to go drink with your parents when you're broke and you don't have anyplace else to go. Don't get me wrong. The staff is friendly and they always make your drinks perfectly correct. They don't have those booths so that you can sit and get all comfy and start pawing on someone that you're digging on.

I've been eating at Calico Jack's for about 6 months or so and have always enjoyed the Special, Chicken Fried Steak with 2 fried eggs. I've had to return the eggs a couple times but the cook finally cooked the white part thoroughly, with no runny yukky slime and left the yellow center nice and runny as it should be. It's always been delicious and fresh, with the usual side choices for less than $10. Today, I thought I'd save a little money and tried a lunch special, open face meat loaf with mashed potatoes for $7.77 or something. I knew that I had made a mistake when I saw the plate coming toward me. It looked really bad. It was dark gravy just smeared over meat and toast, I guess, with some mashed potatoes that are sprinkled with little green things. I couldn't tell what the green things were by the taste, so I asked for butter and added salt and pepper to everything. After a few bites, I told the waitress that I usually order the Chicken Fried Steak Special and I'm not happy with this dish. She looked at me disapprovingly and said she can't take it back. I'm not at all happy with this attitude and I know if it was a better restaurant, I'd have no problem with returning it. I ate only half of the dish. It was not at all as good as I had hoped and I'm very disappointed in Calico Jack's for making me eat something I didn't enjoy.

I give this place 4 stars for nostalgia's sake if nothing else but the remains that this is a pretty cool place. Good food, cheap drinks, plenty of room and not too crowded, what else could you ask for? I used to come here all the time for the karaoke but that section is currently closed down for remodeling. They aren't saying what the large section in the back is going to be used for, but im hoping it's karaoke again. They used to have some big karaoke crowds with lots of talent because of the large venue, great sound etc. This place also has darts, juke box, money shot golf game and plenty of slot machines of course. Even though the large banquet room is currently closed there are still alot of hightop tables to hang out if you don't want to sit at the bar. Oh, and yeah they still have the huge dining room open up front, so theres always that too. Food is 24 hours and there is an old phone booth in case you want to make an interesting social media post. Over all This is a great place, a little dated on the decor and furnishings and the outside looks pretty beat up, so you may have a hard time getting your snobby friends to meet you here but once you get them inside, they will be glad they came.
