Read moreI first stepped into John & Cook’s BBQ in Lawton back in 1982 during my AIT at Fort Sill, and it’s been a cornerstone of my culinary life ever since. Stationed here over the years, I’ve made countless visits, and after retiring in 2014, I settled in Medicine Park—yet I still make the trip for their unmatched flavors. This place is more than a restaurant; it’s a tradition.
The ribs are fall-off-the-bone perfection, smoky and rich, while the brisket is tender and succulent, melting in your mouth with every bite. For lunch, their pulled pork sandwich is a go-to—juicy, flavorful, and piled high. The sides are just as impressive: the potato salad is smooth and creamy, the coleslaw crisp and delicious, and their baked beans? I’m not sure how they do it, but they’re a mystery I’m happy to savor. Lonzo and his crew elevate the experience with their warmth—always personable, always customer-focused. In all the decades I’ve been coming here, I’ve never had a subpar meal. Not once.
John & Cook’s isn’t just BBQ; it’s a Lawton institution that’s stood the test of time. Whether you’re a soldier, a local, or just passing through, this spot delivers consistency and heart in every bite. I’ll keep coming back as long as they’re open—and I hope...

However, there were some fantastic highlights, including the ribs (best I have ever had and I don't even really like ribs that much. No sauce needed! Actually, most all the meat was done very well and was delicious) and the incredible service- our server went above and beyond without us even asking for anything, and they even opened up a table for us that was originally closed off so we would have a little more room for the kids (again, without us asking). I also thought the portions were good, as my husband and I actually ended up sharing a plate. I have seen several reviews about having small portion sizes but I didn't think they were small at all. The brisket and the chocolate cake were both a little dry, but they tasted good. I also wasn't a huge fan of the sauce selection, but that is because I am a wimp when it comes to spice, and two of the three choices had some level of spice (one was sweet with a kick and the other was basically pure heat). The meat was tender enough that it didn't really need sauce though, other than...
