Third time eating from the resturant (catering service is good, see bottom of this review), and will probably be the last time eating at the restaurant. The food is decent, lots of choices and good portions, in a decent diner sense. But with how busy I see this place gets during prime hours, I expected better service during the downtimes. My only theory to this is that they reserve their best wait and kitchen staff for those busy times.
First time was after the dinner rush. We waited nearly 20 minutes to be acknowledged to be seated when the main dining room was half full, and the hostess was very rude about it. Waitress was amazing, however; took our orders in good time, waited to check in on us when our mouths weren't full of food, was pleasant and chatty, and all while apparently being the only waitress (and was staying late cause coverage issues) taking care of all the other diners. I wish I remembered her name, she deserves a raise. Food was decent, I got something that was pretty hard to mess up, same with my husband, our tablemate found ingredients in his that weren't listed and he wasn't a fan of, but he opted to pick around them rather than send it back to the kitchen.
Second time was mid-week mid-afternoon, half-full dining room. Wrong drinks. One of my tablemates had to send his food back twice (cheque showed it was a kitchen issue). Confusion with the cheque situation. At least the waitress checked in with us often, although always briefly and always when we had food in our mouths.
Third time (today) was a mid-week mid-morning... my husband and one tablemate got similar meals. Waiter gave them each other's meals, they didn't realize what had happened (originally they thought the toast choices were swapped, and just traded that) until they had eaten half their food because the plating was messy and items were hidden under others. My cinnamon roll had a ridiculous amount of icing, it was impossible to scrape off enough, couldn't send it back because the waiter was doing all he could to ignore us, I could only eat about half of the outer ring and I ended up in the bathroom sick from it while still in the restaurant. Waiter never checked in with us, other tablemate had to get up twice to physically track down the waiter to get condiments and refills, of which the waiter would only drop off what our tablemate had asked for when he got up before hurrying off out of earshot, never giving us a chance to ask for something else (which is why that cinnamon roll never went back to the kitchen, I wasn't about to start screaming at him to come back and after the second time I gave up). There was only one other occupied table when we got there, and only one other table filled while we were there, so it wasn't exactly busy. Table next to us had remains of a meal on it when we got there, and remained unbussed when we left.
The only reason this is getting two stars from me is because our work often has catering done through here, and THAT is consistently good. If I was only rating based on the shepherd's pie, rolls, and cookies we get from the catering service, that'd be easily four stars, if not five. It's not fancy or innovative, but it's that good, actually comforting, sort of comfort food that can make a bad day at...
Read moreI apologize in advance for the long review, but the quality of service I received was remarkably bad.
The few times I had visited Governors previously, the service definitely wasn't preferable to other restaurants - but tonight absolutely has to top our past experiences at Governors.
The service started out OK - our waitress was personable, but it took a surprisingly long time to receive our pre-meal chowder and salad, and even longer to receive the meal. This wasn't a huge deal, the kicker was at the end of the meal.
We waited, unbelievably, for over an hour to receive the check - our waitress only had two or three other tables, and apparently had messed up the check at one of the other tables. Understandable, but the entire time she was trying to solve this issue with her manager, we were completely forgotten and ignored for at least thirty minutes.
When she stopped at the table in front of us, I assumed she was going to stop at our table after - she didn't. Actually, she hurried off in the opposite direction, seemingly to avoid us. I had to yell to call her over, and she finally came. I asked for a piece of cake to go, boxes for our meals, and the check. When she returned, she only provided us with the meal boxes. I figured she would return with the requested cake, but she did not.
Another twenty minutes later, she finally returned and asked if we would like dessert - admittedly, I was livid. I told her again what I wanted, as she obviously wasn't paying attention the first time. She apologized and said she had it sitting up at the counter and would bring it right back - again, she didn't.
After waiting another thirty minutes, I finally went up to the counter to receive the bill. She gave me the cake I had asked for, and the bill.
The part that really wrapped up the perfect night for my fiancé and I was hearing the manager talk trash about an employee, to another employee - in front of customer ears, at that. She even mentioned that the employee in question was on the phone with his 'drug dealer' the other night, truly classy. In my experience in work environments, that's typically a conversation that you should have privately, not where your paying customers can hear.
Needless to say the waitress didn't get a tip, nor will we return. Truly...
Read moreDriving through and wanted a nice spot to stretch out feet and chill for a bit when I saw this spot... It was a Tuesday afternoon around 2pm. The place wasn't slammed but they seemed to have just finished a usual restaurant lunch rush... We stood for a moment and waited to be seated, can't remember the hostess name but she acknowledged us with a friendly hello and welcoming smile and sat us after loading up some delicious pies(which I regret not getting) in the cooler display. Our server was Kristina who also greeted us with a welcoming smile and took our drink orders. While we looked over the menu it was VERY tempting NOT to order everything just to sample everything out! From seafood to homestyle to classic combos this menu had it all... A little something for everyone withoit crowding the menu with Tom's of needless specials and "deals"... After some thinking it over I ordered the pot roast poutine and my daughter had the Reuben. The food came out hot and fresh and to be honest the menu pictures don't do the food the actual justice, lol.. the Reuben was hot, fresh and the bread was evenly toasted on BOTH sides to a golden brown, nice thin sliced pieces of corned beef and and just the right amount of sauerkraut and dressing served with nice hot crinkle cut fries. I had the pot roast poutine and yeah..... That bad boy had some weight on it!! Served in a nice sized bowl was a nice amount of fries topped with melted cheese, gravy and melt in your mouth chunks of pot roast... Halfway through the meal we switched plates so we could sample each others dishes... We filled up so much that we didn't have room for dessert (next time though)... The bill didn't break the bank despite the prices of the items we ordered as I mentioned there's something for everyone including the prices so matter what there's something everyone can afford. I'll definitely be making a return trip soon ... Definitely gets a...
