I was really hoping this would be an excellent experience, as I recently changed work addresses, and Goodwood is easily the most convenient new lunch spot. Sadly, I can't say I'm inspired to come back.
The goal of the day was simple: find a decent burger. Goodwood has a few options, fairly conventional "fancy" burgers (BBQ + onion straws; fried jalapenos; that sort of thing) all dressed in the usual lettuce, tomato, pickle, and onion. Some of these sounded appealing, but I wanted to go cheap & fast, so I went with the lunch special, which the menu text led me to believe would be as close to a stock-standard burger as they offered. It was not.
First off, the seasoned fries were definitely cold. The place was slow, despite it only being 12:30, so I understand that maybe they didn't have hot fries coming out every 5 minutes, but for these prices I would have expected every meal cooked to order. I love seasoned fries of practically any kind, so this unnecessary disappointment in the first bite really set the stage.
The top bun of the burger was covered in a fairly heavy dollop of stone ground mustard, which I like, but was not expecting. I double checked the write-up for "The Good One" burger, as well as the fine print about what "fully dressed" meant in this establishment, and I hadn't missed anything; this was just surprise mustard.
The patty itself was fine, though perhaps a little thinner than I expected. More on par with Five Guys, or Culver's – not the kind of thick burger you might cook for yourself at home. But, maybe that's what you get from the $9 lunch special. Neither good nor bad, merely sufficient.
All of the veggies were below the patty, which in itself isn't a mark against it (I know different restaurants have their own standards for presentation & flavor profile) but they were cut & stacked very thick, and were not merely cool but distinctly refrigerator cold. It wasn't a pleasant contrast with the heat of the burger, and being so clearly all on the bottom actually reminded me of an ancient marketing campaign for the McDLT - "keep the hot side hot, and the cool side cool." Maybe worst of all, there was a second surprise condiment (mayonnaise or some kind of mayo blend? tzatziki sauce? cole slaw liquid?) glooped into the middle of the veggies. All this, and I didn't even get the A1 I actually asked for.
If I discount the missing A1, the service – thank goodness – was exceptional and pleasant. (Thanks, Lacey!) I was seated quickly, asked if I preferred booth or table, got a fresh pot of coffee & a cup to go offered when I paid. She had a very pleasant demeanor, and checked in just often enough. (But I also didn't have time to let her know about the status of my lunch. Strict 30 minute breaks are a PITA.) I can't complain about the service in the slightest.
Unfortunately, I was primarily looking for a good meal & somewhere to read on my short lunch breaks. Maybe this was an "off" day for them, but with the memory of the first bite of those fries, I'm disinclined to give them another try, when there are so many other places within a mile to check out next.

Read moreMy mom, grandma and myself were out for a shopping day and decided to stop for lunch. We got there at about 1:45pm. When the waiter came over my mom and grandmother ordered root beer and the waiter didn't know if they had that and had to check. After checking and saying yes, he took our drink order and left. One of the other female waitresses brought our drinks along with the door attendant both were very nice. It took what seemed like 20 minutes for the waiter to come take our order for appetizers, we ordered fried green tomatoes (tasted like fish oil) and the bacon beer cheese fries (pretty good). The appetizers came out about 15 mins later brought by the female waitresses from earlier but no little plates to share, so had to ask for some. The waiter finally come back to take our food order. I ordered the drunken chicken sandwich and Brussels sprouts (the chicken has a lot of fat and the brussel sprouts suck). My mom ordered the chicken and waffles (not bad). my grandmother ordered the cod sandwich with NO SALT fries. she told him she can't have a lot of salt. he said he would make sure no salt. When her food came out the fries had salt she told him they had salt, so he takes it back to "fix it". He came back a few minutes later with the SAME FRIES and said that he had the kitchen re-dump the fries in the oil to "WASH OFF THE SALT". She tried the fries and they still had salt on them. She lost complete interest in eating and was discussed. She told us to go ahead she didn't want anything. Instead of fixing a new batch of fries to solve the problem it was made worse by throwing the fries back in the oil. Yes her meal was taken off the bill and the manager apologized but it ruined the mood for the rest of the day because of poor service. Altogether we spent about 1 hours and 45 mins and it wasn't busy at the time. I don't think I would go back...
