L and J Mississippi barbecue — Restaurant in Little Rock Township

I've been living in the Aurora area for about 20 years, and good barbeque is very scarce, I use to have to drive all the way to Chicago for some good neighborhood rib joint style barbeque. But now these wonderful people have brought the flavor of great authentic southern food and ribs to the western suburbs. I love this place the people are great, they welcome and greet you and make you feel like family. The restaurant reminds me of the old rib joints I use to get great food from growing up in Chicago. My Guage of a great barbeque or soul food restaurant is, can you smell the food and the barbeque outside before you open the door, and if you are inside and don't smell anything sauced up sautéed and smoking, you're in the wrong spot. The smell hit me when I got out the truck, the rib tips are great, they melt in your mouth after the meat falls off the bone effortlessly as you inhale and taste the smoked aroma and flavor. The chicken wings are crisp well seasoned and delicious, Harold's and Browns chicken is no competition. The down home soulful sides that they serve on Saturdays are delicious, reminds me of my Grandmother, Mother, and Aunts in the kitchen performing culinary miracles over a hot stove, and the reason why is there is somebody's Mother and Grandmother in the kitchen, with an uncle on the grill and other family members working together to make this a great experience. French fries might very well be the best in town, and the fish tastes just like all the south side soul food shops i grew up with. FURTHERMORE, they get major bonus points for offering southern style mild sauce, which makes the the only place for 20+ miles to offer it! Only reason for 4/5 stars is because they are abit on the pricey side, and they also didnt have the banana pudding prepped and ready prior to opening, to have it ready out the gates. Other than that, everything else about this location was perfect and i look forward to my next trip!

Dont listen to anyone trying to rag them claiming their BBQ doesnt taste a certain way. Alot of people need to understand that, southern Memphis/Nashville style BBQ has an ENTIRELY diffrent taste than louisiana/Mississippi style.

If you go in there with an expectation that its not gonna taste like smokeys and their wood pit, then your setting yourself up for disappointment.

I don’t even like fish but their cat fish is amazinggggggggggg!!! Crispy outside, moist on the inside. In the 2nd photo I got two pieces of cat fish, I ate one before taking the photo. Their sauce ??? Delicious! If you’re looking for city flavor sauce, this is the place to come to ! Their fried wings? FALL OFF THE BONEESSS but crispy on outside. Rib tips? Real good, enough fatty pieces and regular pieces, lots of meat on them! Banana pudding, hits the spot. I don’t like collard greens because of the texture but the ones they gave me WERE washed and cooked right ! Loved their spaghetti!
