Do yourself a favor and eat elsewhere. I use to come to this place as a kid and the quality of the food and service has drastically went down hill.
Ambiance: 8/10 Clean, but a little out dated. I was bummed they got rid of the round bar like area they use to have when I was a kid, but it does look more open and appears to be able to hold more people than before. But to me the appearance is pretty boring and in need of some type of upgrade. But regardless, I would trust eating here as to it appears well maintained and is always clean when I visit.
Service: 6/10 The service is always subpar. The cashier is usually great, but there never seems to be a hostess and the servers are either overwhelmed and can’t keep up with any small to large rush, or they all just don’t know how to work a floor in general (I say this as a former hostess/server/food runner). Even on days when it’s slow, the wait is much too long to be seated, be offered something to drink, or have someone take our order. The food comes out fairly fast but that’s not a good thing all the time.
Food: 3/10 Every single time I come here it’s a huge disappointment. The food is always bland and/or overcooked or undercooked.. it’s always something. I definitely wouldn’t trust ordering the salmon or any meat dish other than a burger or a pot pie.
My last visit I requested a pasta dish but asked for no cheese. The server repeated my order so I know she heard my request. The pasta dish actually looked really good but unfortunately I can’t intake dairy so I had to ask them to redo it. I didn't mind so much that I had to watch everyone else eat while I was hungry and waiting, but it was the food that was brought out to me to replace meal that made me disappointed. It lacked any flavor at all and not even salt and pepper could save it. I’ve been a patron several times and all I can say is the burgers are ok but basic and overpriced, the pot pie is a safe bet, and the breakfast is the only other decent thing served here but honestly there’s much better places such as the Bake n Broil or the Breakfast bar where you get WAY more flavor and a good bang for your buck. With the prices here, you can go elsewhere and get better for the same price. And the amount of mimosa you get for the price is ridiculous when compared to other brunch places.
Unfortunately I will continue to come here once every 3 months or so because my best friend’s father loves it (he’s in his 80’s) and this is where we go when we take him out to eat so we know he’ll be happy.
But for me.. I’ll go down the street to the bake n broil, the breakfast bar or another beloved brunch spot before I ever come here on my own cognition. Most place have open seating at a bar or you’d have to wait 45-mins for food, but it’s always worth it...
Read moreIf not for the ordeal of settling the check where I was being way overcharged, I would have rated 5 stars for this location. Be sure to double check your bill before leaving. In the weekly typically junk mail, we received a coupon for Polly's Fall Festival that included a 3-course meal for 2 for $25. This included a soup or salad x 2, a main course x 2, and a piece of pie x 2. This was perfect for us with something on the selected menu each of us liked. We started out with a 6-piece chicken wings appetizer - half BBQ and Buffalo. They were very good, fresh, and hot. They were listed for $5 on the coupon, normally $8 on the menu. We both had the Dutch Pea Soup, which was thick, creamy with lots of tender hamhock cooked in. It was topped with great croutons and cheese. Much better than that from the Pea Soup Restaurant Up North any day! I had the turkey dinner with mashed potatoes and country style green beans as good as the ones my Grandmother used to fix a long time ago. The stuffing and potatoes were both very good. My friend had the Salisbury Steak with the mashed potatoes and green beans. Excellent. Generous portions. Very attentive waiter. For the dessert course, I had the Apple Pie and my friend had the Pumpkin Pie topped with crumbles. Both of them were very good as all of them are from Polly's. To drink, we both had iced tea at $3 each. The total should have been $5+25+6=$36+3.69 tax=$39.69. However the check was just over $52 with tax. I pointed this out to the waiter and he said that it would be taken care of automatically at the register. We went to the register but the host rang up the same as the check. I pointed out the coupon and he apologized and scanned a $25 barcode and then added the appetizer at $8 plus the drinks and dessert. Again I pointed out the coupon. He apologized and said he would need to get the manager to ring us up. After a while waiting, the manager finally came out and, without saying a word, no apology or anything, started to recalculate the check. Same errors as the first guy. I finally said it should be $36 plus tax. He finally agreed. I asked him to charge each of us $25 which would cover the check and leave a generous tip for the waiter. No problem but hardly friendly. As we were going to the car, I asked my friend how many people he thought this place cheats every day who do not take the time to check their bill. Since this same coupon was delivered to thousands of people in the Long Beach / Signal Hill areas, I can only imagine. I'll be back at Polly's but never this location again. Food and service - 5 stars. Mgmt - 1 star would...
Read moreA very disappointing Long Beach Bixby Knolls restaurant. I’m shocked at the consistent bad customer service and experience. The restaurant has a changing menu and proportion of food that has declined consistently over decades.
I’ve been coming to this restaurant since I was a preteen in the 1980s at the age of 10 or 11. I’m 45 years old now. Growing up this was my FAVORITE place to go. I ordered for 35 years (until it was removed from the menu) the AVOCADO BURGER & Friends. Over the years I watched it loose a friend (only giving you one side instead of two) and shrink in size (meat paddy size and bun size). Over those years maybe a couple times has my order been right which became a running joke for my family and friends. It I kept coming and I kept ordering it for 35 years at this location.
I have recently gone, meaning the last couple years, and watched my most favorite menu items cheapen and or disappear from the menu at a faster rate then before. I also came here with my grandma, my mother and my family over these decades. There is only one staff members who remember me and my family and who will ask about my Mom. Point I’m getting to is this location lacks a sense of community or pride in its neighbors. That’s one of my favorite things about the remaining places like GOLDEN STAR and BAKE N BROIL. They care. They remember you. They ask about your family. They treat you like FAMILY.
My last straw was over the holiday when I had lost my voice and had a severe sinus infection. I came in. I could not go to a family Christmas gathering due to being sick. I needed to either get a refund or a pushed date to pick up two pies I ordered. I talked to a waitress which has served me and my family for many years. She seemed uncaring. And the manager who then stepped in seemed beyond annoyed I’d even ask. Yes. Instead understand being busy especially the day before Christmas. But I work in clients for my line of work. I do not ever let them think they are a burden or an annoyance. I’m sorry I bugged you for asking for help. And I’m sorry I couldn’t speak loud enough.
I’ve watched your staff grow from bussing tables to becoming servers and management. It’s not hard to treat your community members with some loyalty, kindness and respect. I felt very disrespected and dismissed. And I was embarrassed at my consistent belief it...
