Great chow...bit pricey...the language barrier/problem with staff makes complex orders or 'special' request mucho difficult to communicate to total-real authentic MOM & POP owners; pero: se la vie! ... BUT who would want it any other way IN L.A. BABY!! I give this great joint an enthusiastic and supportive QUATRO ESTRELLAS!! Go check them out asap!! You will ABSOLUTELY LUV LUV LUV the simple yet authentic decor and large, quiet dining space -- especially the peaceful and wonderfully cloistered patio dining space in the back! Remember: You're in North University Park/U.S.C. ... so party on 'cuz they also serve not-so-common beers!! either to your dining table OR take a special someone to the two-person/stools bar & have, like i said, a cold imported cerveza; either out of the bottle OR OR OR a chilled glass mug. I recommend u try:::the Taj Mahal beer; it's the only one out of their rather modest/extensive(??) selection that comes in a 'gigante' size!! Strangely the beer AND wine (rojo o blanco) & u can get 'dem either in a bottella or in a carafe - for u and 'dat special-something someone u with. Did u know that the Taj Mahal in India (of course / claro!) -- 1 of the ocho man/woman-made WONDERS OF THE WORLD!! and the homeboy - the sultan - who bankrolled the whole incredible project - the palatial estate! and oversaw the multi-year construction ..... Get this! the mega-mega wealthy $$$$$ sultan ... he built/paid! for it todo...be'cuz he TOTALLY LOVED/AMORED his beautiful bride/esposa and he, the bad-ss sultan, wanted to SHOW/PROVE to his lovely bride/Madre....AND THE ENTIRE WORLD FOR ETERNITY!! just how perfect of a soulmate she was, and shall be for Eternity!! even when he, his wife, and children will be, lo siento, food for earthworms. I've never been to India to see this magnificent, incredible, edifice to aesthetics and love, but i...
Read moreDrive down University Park and you will see a little restaurant that looks like your average corner liquor store. The discreet sign that blends into the building tells you that this location isn’t your average liquor store, but actually the 23rd Street Café!
Street parking is abundant and plentiful depending on the time and season you are visiting. It is a very local spot, mostly frequented by nearby students and Door Dash employees picking up orders for those who rather stay within the comfort of their own home and did not qualify for the restaurant’s free delivery policy. The interior is long and narrow, but can seat a big group comfortably if needed. There is also a small patio area outside for those who would like to experience the great outdoors.
Their menu is very large. It ranges from breakfast foods, Mexican food, Indian food, and even some fusion dishes. I ordered the standard Indian fare, Chicken Tikka Masala, and decided to upgrade to a combo which included rice, naan, a veggie of the day, and dahl. Upon seeing the entrée arrive at my table, I was quite intimidated by the size of the meal. The dahl was bland and was not something that added any substance to the meal, but I did like that they served it in an elementary school cafeteria like tray! The chicken tikka masala wasn’t as flavorful and lacked that kick you would normally expect when eating Indian food. The rice wasn’t as fragrant and when mixed with my curry was lacking in flavor and spice. The naan however, did take me to flavor town! It actually enhanced the curry and saved the entire meal!
A decent spot for Indian food, and would probably prefer to go for the lunch buffet than dinner. If you do go for dinner, I would definitely recommend ordering a combo for maximum value! And, be sure to choose a flavorful naan to accompany the...
