Well it's "full disclosure" time here on Google. I am a volunteer docent at this unique, and historic compound of Victorian mansions, between the convention Center and USC, which is now the downtown campus of Mount St. Mary's University. It is because of the real historic importance of this landmark, and my enjoyment in sharing it with visitors that I volunteer. So there. The main MSMU campus is above the Getty Center, in Brentwood. In 1958 Papal Countess Estelle Doheny, widow of oil, real estate (at one time the family owned most of prime Beverly Hills, and built the Greystone House) and Teapot Dome scandal infamy, tycoon, E.L.Doheny Sr.,donated her entire neighborhood of mansions to the archdiocese. The family also funded the sublime St. Vincent's Church at the intersection of W. Adams, and the Episcopal Cathederal, across Figuerora, both well worth visiting! The then Cardinal felt the best use was as an urban MSMU campus, near St. Vincent's Hospital, another worthy Doheny charity. And who can forget the Doheny Eye Institute, preserving sight since circa 1944! Today Mrs. Doheny's 1898 residence is the official office of the school president, and a beautiful home-venue for the da Camera Society, chamber music in historic sites. More about that in another review. Don"t miss the incredible Pompeiian Room, with it's Tiffany (yes that Tiffany!) glass-dome rotunda. One of the largest, surviving in the world! Two hour tours can be scheduled through the MSMU website and feature what is thought to be the FIRST private swimming pool in Los Angeles. One of the few homes lost, was the Newhall Mansion. They also had a BIG, ranch up near "Magic Mountain." This house was later featured in the classic TV show, "The Adams Family." We feel it was chosen for the show, and eventually lost because of it's spooky, run-down condition. So snap your fingers, gather Thing and Lurch and...
Read moreDoheny transportation are some of the rudest unprofessional drivers that I've seen in my 22-year Plus experience. Doheny3 TCP number plus video will be sent to the California Highway Patrol and the dot. Driving along the shoulder, cutting people off and trying to intimidate those people who he came inches from hitting is unacceptable on California freeways and will not be tolerated. Much more to come. My suggestion would be to drive your own car or hire a professional limousine company or cab driver to transport you to and from this is historical building seems how their drivers are extremely dangerous behind the wheel. This incident happen today January 13th 2017 Northbound 405 at Century Boulevard...
Read moreBeautiful home/mansion. Interesting history told of the Doheny family and their "neighborhood" by the docents. It must be nice to be so rich, although much was given to charity, too. We had one guide for the grounds, then a different docent for inside the house (tour includes the first floor only). Ended in a room with a great glass roof (where musical events are held sometimes). Knowledgeable guides made for an interesting morning, while the fineness of the architecture and furnishings made the tour a treat for the eyes. Well worth the $15 per person fee, which goes for the upkeep...
