I had a very disappointing experience at the EveryTable located at University Park near USC. I am a grad student at USC. I'm also of Cuban descent. To that end, I understand that my directness may come across to Westerners or non-Caribbean Hispanics as rude. With that said, when I was inquiring about vegan options in my naturally direct manner, the manager-- a short, petit-framed, Hispanic-looking male-- mistook my directness for condescension and proceeded to tell me I was being rude and condescending by using "You-statements" rather than "I-statements." As someone taking leadership and organizational management courses as part of her degree program, I was shocked! When I proceeded to reframe his presumptive accusatory statements as rude, he empathically declared, "You have two options: one, I can personally escort you out..." I was shocked that such a threat was made. It seemed to me a disproportionate reaction to an allegedly "rude" customer. Simply because he didn't like my direct tone, he threatened to kick me out. I comprehend that to save face, this individual may claim otherwise. Let me be very clear: I did not make any rude comments to this man until after he threatened to kick me out. My questions uncovered his incompetence; he, as a manager, did not know all the vegan and gluten-free options. Perhaps, by unveiling his ignorance, I unconsciously remind him of a female figure in his life who has wounded him. More likely, however, he's unconsciously misogynic, as misogyny is rampant in Hispanic cultures. Fragile male egos become easily threatened by strong and direct women. Moreover, he was about the same height and size as me, and I am only 5'5" and 117 pounds, just to give you an idea. In other words, he was not that much bigger than me. Consequently, I think his male fragility was threatened, and rather than handle the situation as someone in a managerial position ought to handle the situation, he proceeded to abuse his authority by exerting his male dominance and privilege over me by threatening to kick me out. When I told him, "you are losing a customer," he said something to the effect: "I don't care if we lose a customer." I was in disbelief! I fell in love with this place the first time I walked in and had intended to make it my go-to choice when I can't cook at home. As in every patriarchal society, fragile men who feel emasculated commit acts of aggression against women, and when women react, we are seen as hysterical. I don't even blame this individual, as I understand the systemic forces operating within him and through him. I do, however, think EveryTable bears responsibility for hiring such a person who is not culturally competent or effective as a manager when dealing with clients he finds "problematic." I work as a French and Spanish interpreter. In this role, I have to deal with people who come across as rude, and who sometimes directly insult me. I don't internalize their rudeness since I have to remember my role, so my ego remains in check. This is called maturity. This guy seemed very young and insecure. I am disappointed since I support the mission and values of EveryTable. Moreover, I want to be a customer, but EveryTable has hired someone who DOES NOT CARE IF THEY LOSE CUSTOMERS, which is problematic as a business model. I would like to continue shopping there, but I don't feel safe going back there due to his...

Read moreTimes have been tough, eh? It was nice to see this EveryTable open up in this neighborhood, and even more so because they were accepting EBT/SNAP, especially since the supermarket across the street doesn't and most of the folks and families who LIVE here (not usc students) are low-income AND could use access to healthy meals. Well lo and behold, they've stopped accepting EBT/SNAP benefits. Why? "'cuz the state cut it off" and only if you're part of the hot meals program. That's not a lot of people, btw. What's interesting about EveryTable is that their mission was precisely to offer delicious, healthy meals for low-income folks and they popped up in low-income areas and food deserts, but now that access has been cut off. Y'all mean to tell me with the clout Homeboy Industries has y'all can't advocate and make a stink about this to the state? You're failing at...
