We ordered the Salmon and Lime roll, as well as the Hubba Hubba, both of which were my first experience with a tart flavor mixing with everything else that Sushi delivers. It goes beautifully! Especially for people who like tart/sour flavors, this is one reason to visit Dojo.
We sat at the bar. The service was prompt and friendly. The rolls were presented beautifully, though they didn't always maintain their integrity, and sometimes the presentation itself compromised the separation of the pieces of sushi. I like good presentation, but at least when it comes to sushi, the party in my mouth takes precedence over the party on my plate!
Other than this, the sushi was top-drawer. The flavors were very cleverly put together in the specialty rolls. I ordered a California roll to test their "regular" roll chops, and it was beautiful, the crab and the avocado separating and combining smoothly.
Of course, like all sushi places at this price point, the Wasabi isn't actual Wasabi, it's the green paste, and it is on the milder side. The soya is also not intensely salty.
We liked the decor with the tables by the window. The only thing docking a star are the prices, they were just a shade too high for the mix of food, ambience...
Read moreWeird little sushi spot on Ventura just East of Van Nuys Blvd in the Southern-most store-front in a large shopping center. Lots of available parking, though the up-front parking closest to the restaurant is awkward and packed. There's some street parking.
The interior of the place is pretty small. There's a large L shaped counter that can seat at least 12 and a handful of tables. There are a few tables out in front that seem to only get used during late afternoon or evening. There are gas-powered heaters outside.
Inside, the counter is covered by a couple of chefs that handle all the fish. There are a large number of servers that cover the tables. There's a kitchen in the back for cooked dishes. Service is fair to good.
The fish quality is above-average, but not so much that it's worth getting excited by. Cuts are on the small side. Sushi is on the under-sauced side of things and could use a bit of accompaniment.
Prices on the sushi and sashimi are pretty good. Rolls are on the high side. Overall a...
Read moreI've always wanted to check this place out as I've always seen a good sized crowd here when driving by and we finally did last week. We got there a bit early and thankfully there wasn't a wait. We were greeted and taken to our table and immediately were given hot towels to freshen up.
There seemed to always be a flurry of servers running in and out of the back, there were as many servers as there were tables but the service was not exceptional, it wasn't bad, but with that many servers running around I'd expect to never wait for drink refills or Wasabi top offs or be asked if we wanted to place another order. Weird.
The sushi here is average at best. I can only question what the attraction is here as there are much better options within a 5 to 10 minute drive. Outside of Little Tokyo, Ventura Blvd has some of the best sushi in LA, skip the line here and try any of the...
