The Hungry Fox is an old school American diner style joint in the heart of the Tile District on Sherman Way, North Hollywood. I've been driving by this place for years and finally we had the chance to stop in and check it out. Generally speaking the food was good with fairly generous portions. Though what we had wasn't particularly spectacular and deserving of the slightly higher prices for their food compared to what you can get elsewhere, or at a much nicer restaurant in a much nicer neighborhood.
The coffee was decent enough basic diner coffee. I could actually taste it which is a good start considering many American restaurants don’t really try with their coffee and you end up getting “browned water.” My wife had the decaf which had a completely different flavor profile that was too acidic for our tastes and not like the more traditional bold taste in the regular.
They have a large menu and seem to not cater to anyone with any special dietary needs. There is no milk available except for regular milk. (no non-dairy option) and there aren’t any gluten-free options anywhere in sight.
My wife had greens and eggs and found it to be fresh…the mushrooms were good and the onions were a little too crispy for her tastes, but she added that the house-made salsa it came with had a nice spice to it.
I got a two egg breakfast, made with egg whites. I had ordered hashbrowns and they brought home fries (I wouldn’t have realize the difference except that our kid ordered and hashbrowns and got hashbrowns and obviously different.) I asked for a biscuit for my bread option which they charge me an extra $.50 for the scenes without letting me know about that I had of time) and it was all seven additional one dollar for the egg whites which I guess is pretty standard anywhere. All in all it was pretty basic and good for what I ordered and exactly the kind of basic egg breakfast that I was in the mood for. (Nothing “new American” or fancy about it. My only complaint, besides the price is that the biscuit was grill. When you grill a biscuit you kind of take away all it's biscuitness and create a whole other product, so I wish I knew that they were going to grill it as I would have asked them not to, or would've ordered something different for the bread. Other than that, as I said, it was the basic diner breakfast I was looking for.
Got homemade jams including apple butter at the table all of which were good.
Service wise at the beginning of the meal our waitress was not particularly friendly and seemed in a hurry to get our order out so she can move on to other tables. It was definitely very busy so I understand her desire to do that, but it's never fun as a customer to feel like it's happening to you. When she first came to the table we weren't ready to order and asked if she could come back and it took her a long time to come back and we felt like we were being punished a little bit because we weren't ready she was.
The experience wasn’t bad. It’s a nice unique step up from a chain restaurant like Denny’s…but it also wasn’t particularly great for our vegetarian, gluten free (one of us), and general desire to have really...
Read moreIt’s always unfortunate when you walk into somewhere just wanting to eat food, and walk out with this deep distress that you have to sit around with for the day just because a server decides to treat you like you’re a waste of time.
I tried to get a plate of chicken and waffles and as I looked at the chicken, I was uneasy about the quality. In particular, there was one wing that looked old and…honestly I was concerned it had been re-fried? I didn’t seem to blame anyone but my own perception, but I didn’t feel comfortable eating it. As politely as I could, whilst again blaming myself and not having taken a single bite, I told the server that the chicken didn’t look good to me, and I didn’t find it the kitchen’s fault, saying “perhaps I don’t know where it’s sourced from, I just don’t feel comfortable with it” and asked for another meal that had waffles on it, just a different type of meat. She clearly, quickly, got mad. She became short, grabbed the plate brusquely, went over to the server counter where the register was, right across from me, to punch the new order and…threw the plate on the server counter. Like, in that way that signals to me that either she felt that I asked that out of turn, or that I just made her life an utter catastrophe, or , just very, very aggrieved…she went to go back to the kitchen, and I could see the chef from where he was sitting. He turned and glared at me in the eye. I mouthed “I’m so sorry,” and clasped my hands, and I was honestly afraid—would there be some sort of retaliation on my food? She just got SO mad, SO unexpectedly, I honestly got concerned, as if I had committed a crime!!!
The new plate got tossed on my table with little care, and the turkey bacon was very, very undercooked. Shaken and unsure of what to even do, I just shut up ate it because I was so thrown off and just wanting the experience to be over so I can go do the rest of my day like I had planned to do. I quickly finished the meal trying to rationalize as much as I could about what happened, and left.
It is such a damper on your day when you get so unnecessarily mistreated like that. I was polite, and as accommodating as I could be and was deeply distressed by this experience. Looking at the reviews it doesn’t look like people are treated like this often…I could chalk it up to a bad day, or I could ask perhaps, which customers are getting which treatment? Regardless, I...
Read moreJust tried these guys for the first time since moving to this part of LA. Great service - the main waitress lady was very sweet and smiley and attentive even though it was just her and one other waitress working in the restaurant. She gave me a booth even though I was dining solo which I appreciate as some other places would never do that. So extra props for that kindness!👍🏽. And to the food - so I had the breakfast burrito with their special homemade Thai pork sausage (what distinguishes it as Thai is that it has little bits of lemongrass in it). This dish is $10.79 and was appropriately priced for the quality and the amount of meat they put in it, imo. The burrito was good - a nice “fusion” dish, as it were - and it comes with sour cream and homemade salsa on the side. The salsa was just ok, but that didn’t matter cuz the sausage made the burrito and gave it good flavor (I am a stickler for flavor - I hate bland food!). Also it was not too salty, the cheese was good, and the potato and eggs in the burrito were cooked just right. I also had a Thai iced coffee which was good but a little bit too sweet. And lastly, from the looks of other dishes on other people’s plates - French toast, waffles, and a tuna melt - the other food looks promising! Overall, I would recommend and I will come back for sure to try...
