Went back and forth on writing the review. Partly wanted to call and make a suggestion( more of a complaint). Visited the store today to pick a few spices quickly. Checked if it was crowded before entering. With only a couple of customers within the store i gathered the courage to enter the store( with the presumption that social distancing - 6 feet distance would not be successful ). I heard someone cough and started to look where and how far away that person was. It was alarming that it was the lady who does the billing. She was clearly ill and coughing all around the place with a poorly made mask, worn below the nose, just covering the mouth. I went ahead and got the items billed while i was super scared. My fear came true. she coughed while she was billing, right at me. I din’t speak a word, just ran out as soon as i could. Now the question is - How irresponsible is it on the lady herself and the management to let her continue to work while the entire world is facing the wrath of the virus ? How hard is it for people to follow a simple precaution- to stay home when sick ?? The media, health organizations and government are all striving to contain the exponentially spreading virus and this is absolutely the behavior that goes against all the efforts.
I really feel sorry for writing this negative review cause i have no complaints with the friendly staff otherwise. But this is important. This could lead to many customers falling sick. Again, no complaints about the store or the staff. I cannot help but condemn the casual attitude at these times. I could have made a call and spoke about this but the entire world is screaming it and did not seem to be taken seriously....
Read moreBear Man and I have been driving bye this place for years, saying we were going to stop and try it. Finally we stopped, and then we found out why this place is always full of people. Park in the back. Feels kinda creepy at first like most alley parking does, but there are usually customers coming and going so it's not so bad. When you come in the door you're in the market part, which feels disorganized with shelves haphazardly stocked and big sacks of lentils and whatnot stacked towards the front of the store. The restaurant is attached. There is always a line. Everyone is from India and I don't understand a word, so when it's my turn I look in the deli case and I have no idea what anything is called. So I point. Everything is vegetarian. I get a few things and I go to pay, and it's $4.96 tax included for my "lunch special"! Which is served all day. So I'm super happy about that. We sit down in our nothing to speak of booth. Really cool Indian music playing. And take a taste of the cauliflower. OMG. Everything was so flavorful! We loved it so much we took a plate to go. We've been back again and again. The sweets and chai tea are delicious too. I left a star out. For ambience and a little craziness standing in line to order. But it's worth it. The previous reviewer is right. At this price you can try for yourself. Now I'm craving that cauliflower. I'll post a picture...
Read moreWe are exploring different Indian food eateries in the area. Our experience at this India Sweets & Spices inspired me to write a review. Let's start with the good: the menu of hot foods is extensive and the food itself is good! You can order chaat, dosas, uttpams, parathas, veggies galore, and lunch specials (veggies, dhal, chapati or bhatura, rice, raita, and pickles). The samosas are plump and delicious. The scoops of veggies a la carte are generous. The dosas come out quickly. And overall, the food is good, including the sweets.
Now on to the less good. Most obviously: the service. The man who helped us with our sweets order rolled his eyes when we said we wanted four pieces. Is that not enough to warrant an order/his service? And there was just generally not the greatest service I've experienced, even at one of these low-key, casual, cafeteria style places. The prices also seemed a little on the higher side for some things. And despite the extensive menu, a lot of items weren't labeled (I suppose this matters more for the uninitiated like me) and the selection of sweets was smaller than expected.
For hot food and sweets, I would opt for Baba Sweets instead. For super basic grocery items, I would try another store first (the Valley Marketplace has a surprising Indian food section!). But if I needed a very specific and maybe more niche grocery item, I...
