Islands Restaurants is more than just a burger joint — it’s a vibe, a community, and a California tradition!
After a perfect day out surfing with some friends, soaking up the sun, and enjoying the salty breeze of the Pacific, we were craving something fresh, flavorful, and satisfying. That’s when we stumbled into Islands — and honestly, I think we found our new favorite spot.
The moment you walk in, you feel it — the laid-back, beach-inspired atmosphere, the friendly smiles, the tropical tunes, and that unmistakable aroma of burgers sizzling on the grill. You can tell this place wasn’t created by some corporate food lab — it was born from real surf culture and a love for good times and good food. Turns out, that’s exactly how it started back in 1982 when the founder, inspired by the warmth of Hawaii and the simplicity of a post-surf meal, opened the first Islands in SoCal. That original vision is still alive and well over 40 years later.
Let’s talk food. The burgers are next-level. Juicy, fresh, cooked to perfection — you can taste the quality in every bite. I had the Maui Burger with fresh grilled pineapple and teriyaki sauce, and wow. Add in the crisp Island Fries (they come in a bottomless basket!) and an ice-cold tropical drink, and you’ve got a meal that hits every note. My friends tried a mix of items, from the Kilauea Burger to the Beach Bowl, and everything was on point.
But what really sets Islands apart is their heart. This is a company that gives back in big ways. Over $500,000 a year goes into local communities — how amazing is that? From fundraising nights that support youth sports and schools, to the Golden Pineapple Awards for standout students, to Scrip Cards that help schools earn money — Islands really walks the walk when it comes to community support.
They’ve even got adult sports team sponsorships and an easy way to apply online for fundraising or sponsorship help. Whether you’re a parent trying to raise money for your kid’s little league team or a teacher recognizing a student who went above and beyond, Islands has your back.
On top of all that, the staff is consistently kind, attentive, and genuine. At every location I’ve visited — whether in California or Arizona — the service has been top-tier. It’s clear they care about the guest experience as much as they care about the food.
If you’re looking for a chill spot to eat, relax, and connect — whether with friends, family, or your community — Islands is the place. It’s where tropical flavor meets California soul.
Highly recommend. We’ll definitely be back (again and again)!

When it comes to the local community, we believe there’s nothing more important than the local schools. Read moreBad management can make or break a restaurant. Very poor management. Tried this place for the first time yesterday with my daughter. Received a promo for a free kids meal. They tried to force me to sit at the bar with my child, stating "it's ok, kids are aloud". Sorry I don't want to sit in the BAR with my child.
My daughter ordered a cheeseburger and fries and I ordered the Kilavea Burger wrapped in lettuce no bun.
The Kilavea Burger is supposed to be a jalapeno and black peppered burger with onions (deep fried in batter which is not stated on the menu). I asked for it medium. I received a well done patty caked in pepper, with fried onions (dry), wrapped in lettuce missing its sauce. I couldn't taste any sign of jalapeno whatsoever.
My daughter got a patty with a piece of cheese in a bun. She immediately asked for some of my lettuce stating it was litterly a burger with a piece of cheese and should have had at least a piece of lettuce maybe a tomatoe.
I didn't ask to speak to the manager but he walked by and asked how everything was.
I said do you want to know the truth? He replied yes.
I said in all honesty the burger was just a dry overcooked, peppered burger with fried dry onions wrapped in lettuce.
He says well when people ask for it without the bun we leave the sauce off purposefully.
He literally told me next time we come in again (which will never happen) to ask for the sauce to be put on even without the bun and told me he was sorry for my poor experience.
There will not be a next time. It was dinner and the place was empty. Maybe because you charge 14 dollars for a horrible burger. 😖
In the end I paid $25 ($4 tip) for what was supposed to be a free kids meal, a dried up beef patty completely caked in pepper, some fries and a tea.
The Counter is considered an expensive burger joint I would gladly pay for considering what I'm getting, good quality meat, made to order, exactly how I want it.
5 Guys is another pricey burger I would GLADLY pay for considering the quality of meat and product. Both of which are within a couple miles of Islands.
Sorry Islands, but you were a...
Read moreIslands Restaurant in Sherman Oaks on Ventura Boulevard is a tasty place for a quick bite with a beer. The menu includes "islander" favorites like the Shorebird (a chicken breast sandwich with tomato, lettuce and pickles). Hamburgers have surf names like Longboarder which has 1000 Island Dressing or Pipeline which has chili and cheddar cheese. Their Tortilla Soup is the bomb. My absolute favorite here of all Tortilla Soups.
Islands no longer offers a side with their meals so if you want fries, they are extra and a bigger portion, obviously.
Parking on the street is limited but there is parking in the back in an attached parking garage. I have not had a hard time finding a parking spot yet, I hope I am not jinxed now for saying so.
Service here has always been friendly and quick. Tonight our table was checked on atleast five times. Our waiter offered menu selection ideas and dessert, Chocolate Lava or a Kona Pie. Sounds delicious!
There are many t.v's for viewing sporting events or the Olympics in our case. Nice, big screens. The bar is inviting also with seating and t.v. screens. There is an outdoor dining patio in a loggia type setting visible to foot traffic. The breeze is nice.
Four stars, because quite frankly the food is "bar type" food. Nothing really craveable but tasty enough to want to visit the...
