The Goods: Reliability consistency and that Real good Soul Food experience when I think of M'Dears. Unlike a lot of the soul food places in the area, M'Dear always keeps it doors open, has a great team of dedicated cooks, waitresses and busboys. They From the delicious Oxtails and Mac and cheese to the supple and delightful salmon and catfish..it's a win across the board. And also unlike most of the soul food places in the area, M'Dears allows the Dine-In experience to be genuine and reliable. As a child that grew up on the classic soul food experience being rooted in a family gathering, sticking to these roots. They are always my Go-To for Soul Food experience. The Ugly: Sometimes with delivering good service they get overwhelmed with orders and big plates of food per person. We waited longer than expected for our drinks, food and sides. While the staff was pleasant I could see that they haven't sharpened their coordination in the back and translating it to the front. This appears to be a management problem. Every experience will differ just something I've observed over a few times of coming. The back dining area is really a hidden Gem because it has potential (bar area, additional larger seating, back patio for outside dining...yet... they need to expand their space or organize their kitchen a little better since alot of their appliances, extra pots, seasoning rack is back there as well. It's an eye sore for the unloyal customers.

Update: We visited M'Dears just after New Year’s. Our young adults said the pancakes were mediocre and tasted odd to them. I tried some of the pancakes, and I thought they tasted good. I ordered Reggie’s Vegetables, which turned out to be quite bland. Most of the vegetables, like peppers, onions, and broccoli, were raw. The home-style potatoes were the highlight of the meal. The only thing that made it better was the eggs—both overeasy and scrambled—that our children shared with me since they don’t eat them. We suspected our waiter was new because we had to ask a couple of times before we finally received our warm water. This time, we paid the bill after the meal, which was different from our experience on Mother’s Day in 2024. For our Mother’s Day celebration at M'Dears in Los Angeles, the atmosphere was very neighborhood-friendly, and you could tell they support many local businesses. A good number of people came out to celebrate the occasion. The value and portion sizes were well-balanced. They served some delicious drinks, especially one called the New Orleans Hurricane. The French toast, chicken sausage, and hotcakes were all tasty. I also tried salmon croquettes and fried snapper, but both were dry and lacked rich flavor. Overall, we enjoyed the food and were fully satisfied, so we decided to return to M'Dears in the future. The menu is extensive, and there are plenty of sweet options, like banana pudding.

Restaurant is extremely small space - I do recommend management does a better job communicating with patrons when they enter (it was completely disorganized and no one seemed to provide clear directions to anyone). Overall, really enjoyed the food here. Would not recommend the potatoes - seemed days old, dry, cold. However, the grits were AMAZING - hot, buttery, creamy, seasoned - amazing. Bacon and eggs were good. Banana Nut Waffles were ok. With the name Banana nut waffle, I expected the banana, nut, and any flavoring to be incorporated into the waffle mix. However, it was a plain waffles topped with fresh banana and pecans - so for those who don’t mind that you’ll love it, but I wasn’t a fan of it. However, the fresh homemade strawberry lemonade was AMAZING - it was just perfect. Finally, M’Dears has some homemade desserts (cakes and pies). The Sock-It-To-Me cake was in fact a pound cake with a slight swirl (that’s not how that cake is made so I did not enjoy that at all). Enjoyed the 7-up pound cake. Overall, this is definitely a place to stop by for some good food and homemade desserts if you’re in Los Angeles - I’ll definitely be back (hopefully some improvements are made to the service operations). Overall, staff were nice and attentive. Because the physical space is small, please be patient - It’s worth the wait and I look forward to returning.

TO THE OWNER OF THIS BUSINESS…

The food here at M’Dears is something I’ve heard is a must try when in LA and was excited to visit. Upon my visit, however, a decrepit level of customer service was experienced by myself and company that completely turned us off and left.

To begin, there was staff working in the front entrance but we were not acknowledged at all upon entrance. After a few minutes, I made an attempt to try to get the attention of said staff but their back was turned to us and was not approachable. However, a second staff member gave from what looked like the back and immediately greeted us cordially (which I definitely appreciated). However, when inquires were made about dine in, she explained to me that

The outdoor patios were not available although there was a gentleman at the time sitting outside enjoying what looked like a very tasty meal.

The back section was closed for seating at the time, leaving only the front section where just about every seating booth was occupied.

At this point, the first staff member whom I tried to talk to upon entrance chimed in a few words, either confirming what was said by the other but in a distasteful way. At this point, I was flabbergasted at the amount of disrespect I had endured in a span of 5 mins and proceeded to leave instead of reciprocating the said level of disrespect back. I say all this to say a few things in conclusion:

Your food looked amazing and would still like an opportunity to try it

Your employees should undergo a new training of customer service because what I experienced was definitely not it

Clarify the dine in options with proper signage to new patrons so that there is no confusion between who is allowed to dine outside and who isn’t

There is no real point of having 5 star quality food for people to eat if you cannot have the equal level of customer service available to match it - no one wants to feel invisiable or ignored at a patron in a dining establishment

I hope you heed my suggestions so that your restaurant can continue to be received at a must dine experience in one of this country’s biggest urban regions. Thanks for reading and have...

Today Jan 29, 2020 I call M’Dears, the phone rang twice and hung up. I called back two more times, same thing. On my forth and final attempt, a young man answered normally and took my order. I asked how long, he told me 15 min. I showed up in 20 min to make sure my order was going to be ready so I could be in and out as I have low blood sugar and need to eat at a certain time and I knew I was close to my time but had a taste for something different and have only been here in years past and try to go out of my way to patronize my community and people. Well after waiting more than 20 min once I arrived; 45 min after I ordered and paying $24 for lunch I was not happy with, I decided to write a review. The portions are large but that’s about it. My potato salad was very salty (but I am sensitive to the taste of it). I receive no pickles at all when I requested extra pickles and a not enough salad dressing for my large salad even tho I asked for a side salad. While I was waiting, I had the misfortune of watching orders going out and being returned, no silverware on the table before the food arrives, toast coming out wayyyy after the food and listened to two phone ordered that were wrong and the people called back to complain and with shrugged shoulders from 3 employees that were discussing it and with a, i heard it in my head type of response, while they know I’m sitting there and can see and hear them. I was very displeased. I should have looked in my bag that was sitting on the counter for a while before they decided to give it to me and that I would have asked for if I knew it was mine, but I was so eager to get out of there at that point I wasn’t even thinking clearly since my sugar was dangerously low at that point, maybe I would have noticed the items missing, ooh my bad. 🤗 I’m sure it’s known I will not be returning for the overpriced salty food topped off by bad service. I rather go across the street to the fast food place. At least they get my order right and in a...

I give it three stars. I would give it 5 because some of the servers are AWESOME (like Carollee and CeCe, they are very attentive with warm personalities) and the food is pretty decent. I usually get the same two things, egg white veggie omelet for breakfast or the salmon salad for lunch. -- BUT, there are some servers that work there (are they the owners???) that have HORRIBLE manners and NO CUSTOMER SERVICE SKILLS whatsoever. I brought my friend by recently for a late lunch. I raved about the place. We waited several minutes to even be acknowledged. She was making coffee, putting things away, futzing around behind the counter before we finally got our menus and then we sat for another several minutes before the server came back very nonchalantly and asked what we wanted. Salmon Salad we said. WE AIN'T GOT NO SALMON today with the driest voice i ever heard. We were so taken back, we left. He looked at me and said, don't ever take me there again. I was disappointed because i wanted him to experience a good meal. I mean, i have seen these waitresses before and i noticed how rude they were to be in food service, but they never waited on me so i didn't think anything of it. Mind you, she was the only waitress that i could see on staff, but there was also only 1 other person in the restaurant at the time we went. I say try it, but beware!!!! the not-so-cool-make-you-wanna-leave waitress just may serve you. ...
