RIP Mort's! The new owners are changing it to "The Nosh" and it has gone way down hill. The sign out side still says Morts, but the menus say "The Nosh", so first off the restaurant (and me as a guest) doesn't know it's name. The new owners (from two years ago) are in the process of changing it over to "The Nosh" to match their other location. I was there at 1230 on a weekday, when it should be packed, and there were maybe six spots taken.
They've redone the inside and while it is nice, there is no longer any of the Mort's charm and it looks like a generic restaurant. They even closed off the entrance to Bea's Bakery so they could put a few more tables in the place. See my photo for the sign in Bea's about it.
I was there with three people and we each got the lunch special. Two of us had the corned beef sandwich and chicken noodle soup and one had the turkey sandwich and Matzo ball soup. The soup was good. Portion size was pretty normal, but it wasn't as flavorful. They served it with pre-packaged saltine crackers instead of rye bread and they now charge for rye bread for the table, where it used to be free.
As to the sandwiches, they were half of what they used to be. You used to have to fight to get a bite because the sandwiches were so thick, now I didn't even need to open my mouth all the way. Definitely not the Mort's experience. On top of that, the seasoning and taste of all the meat was off, like it was unsalted. I've had bigger sandwiches at the local non-Jewish deli. For $20 a person, and for MORT'S DELI, I expected more.
I've been making the trek out here from Ventura County for decades and it's always been so good. Not anymore. This is the last time I'll be going there. It used to so much better than Brent's Deli, and today I wished I was at Brent's. I left hungry for the first time... and not just hungry but feeling like I hardly had anything!
I can say that the waitress and staff were friendly and the...
Read moreVery disappointed. The owner of Mort's Deli really treated my mother poorly. My mother loves the challah bread at Bea's Bakery attached to Mort's Deli. So she stopped by with my father as they drove through the area. While she bought the bread, my father went and used to restroom at Mort's. When my mother had challah in hand, she walked into the deli to find my father. The owner stopped her and asked for her vaccination card. My mother is vaccinated but, given she wasn't eating at the restaurant, she wasn't prepared. She tried to find the vaccination card in her purse but was having difficulty locating it, during which time the owner became increasingly loud and rude about how she can't come in if she doesn't have a vaccination card, making her flustered and the task more difficult. Also my mother who is Spanish speaking and just recovering from a stroke also affects her speech and delays her response time. Given that and the owner's aggressive tone, she couldn't express to the owner that she was just trying to find her husband. He loudly told her that she must leave. After all his yelling, she finally found her vaccination card. I understand vaccination checks are necessary to dine in Los Angeles and this creates tensions. But it can be done with patience. By approaching a woman in her 70s with aggressiveness and rudeness, not giving her a chance to explain, the owner created a situation and made my mother feel embarrassed and ashamed. That's not right. Even the employees at Bea's took notice and offered sympathetic words in Spanish as she was leaving. I've always wanted to eat here and try their food but...
Read moreI have now tried going here twice and been disappointed both times. I ordered my food To-Go. I will list the positives first. is The service was friendly and quick. I ordered a BLT with a side of cucumber salad for 17.99 which is pictured on their website. The one I received was a far cry from the one pictured and had 3 slices of bacon so nothing special there. The cucumber salad was fresh and came in a 1/2 pint container and was very good. It was not $17.99 good. I decided to try again and ordered the Mort's famous Reuben with a side of macaroni salad for $19.99. The sandwich was good. The macaroni salad however came in a dressing cup and consisted of 2 bites. If I had ordered fries would I have received 5? Really? The cucumber side came in a 1/2 pint container is macaroni salad side more expensive or something? I was incredulous. I set my car key fob next to container to show comparison. If I had been served this at the table I would have scoffed. I will be eating at the competitor down the street for these items . Service is just as friendly, prices are slightly better and food quality is...
